Last night I finished a book called "Twelve Shots", edited by Harry Mazer. It's a collection of short stories about the impact of guns on today's youth. I'd recommend anyone read it. The last page of the book had some stats from the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence, Wash. DC 1996 handgun homicides: Australia - 13 Great Britain - 33 Sweden - 36 Japan - 60 Switzerland - 97 Canada - 128 USA - 13,495 Does anyone else notice anything odd here? ...of course if you want to talk about *really* dangerous things to do, let's talk about driving. According to the Alberta Government, over 400 Albertans *per year* are killed in car accidents. That's 400 out of about 2.5 million people. I don't know if it's accurate to draw a parallel to the U.S. population, but if I did, it would mean that 40,000 Americans would die in car accidents each year. Kinda makes you think, doesn't it? Yes, I notice something. But most likely not what they intended. For those of you that do not know the situation in Switzerland: Population: 7 mio, citizens: 6 mio Military service: militia, obligatory for every able bodied male Infantery (personal weapon M16/AK47 style things): ca 70%, over 1 mio ##All soldiers must by law store there personal weapons at home, inclusive one ration of emergeny ammunition (24 rounds for assault rifle)## Private Guns are estimated to outnumber military by factor 3. No exact statistics as no paperwork required with the exeption of concealable or automatic weapons. Also known as the weapons supermarket of Europe. Yes, this is the place where William Tell is claimed to have lived. -- private: Neil.Franklin@ccw.ch.remove http://www.ccw.ch/Neil.Franklin/ office: franklin@arch.ethz.ch.remove http://caad.arch.ethz.ch/~franklin/
