The increase of its occurence is due to a "strike" by those who normally keep it from making it to the newsgroups. All groups are feeling it. If you aren't seeing it (like me, I guess), then your news provider is cancelling it out and the "strike" isn't affecting you. Some Internet Providers are concerned about customer service. Others clearly aren't. I'm afraid that AOL (as many people will happily tell you) only cares about the $20/month from you. They figure that with so many millions to pay them, one or two quitting due to crappy service ain't gonna hurt. They do very little at all to stop the spam and other crap. Their security is particularly easy to get around and they don't care to do anything to improve it. Complaints fall on deaf ears. They're more likely to drop subscribers than to go after abusers. Judging from what Melandra says, her ISP has set filters that automatically delete out spam posts or posts of an overtly sexual nature. My ISP has done the same thing and I'm glad that they do. If your ISP isn't giving you desirable service, by all means vote with your wallet. Switch to a better service and let them know why you are leaving. I'm sorry that this has turned into a rant. (snip) Greetings, all. According to my ISP, the spamflood is due to a demonstration/protest by some people that actually try to control the amount and type of spam in the newsgroups. It seems that they have been accused of unfairly editing content of the usenet. As a response, they have turned off their automated seek and destroy programs, apparently to show everyone (and especially those that maintain the usenet system) how beneficial their programs (known as spambots) are. One can only hope that the spambots will go back on line soon and reduce the deluge somewhat. Since the vast majority of newsgroups are unmoderated, and many ISPs don't want the possible legal hassles and extra workload of editing content, these spambots keep the flood down to a manageable trickle. And some advice to all: If you are offended by the spam, or just offended by getting spammed, send a copy to abuse@_your_ isp if they have this service. DO NOT reply to the sender or their ISP - most are fake addresses. Also, do not reply to "remove" addresses to have your name removed from their mailing list - all you are doing is broadcasting your email address to other spam dealers. I hope this helps. There are some people who run "cancelbots" for usenet, that cancel spam postings (based on certain formulae); since the 'bots cancel the spam before it reaches the newsgroups, we (thankfully) don't get to see all that much. They have initiated a moratorium for the month of April, in an effort to raise awareness of the scope of the problem in the general usenet user. Hopefully, this will push more ISPs into setting up their own spam filters (as some do), to reduce the strain that spam causes the entire system. The site is a bit intense, but the information is very good. You might want to check out the sites listed at the following url for some hints as to how to combat spammers. http://www.sputum.com/cns/tools.html Also support the Smith Bill H.R. 1748, "The Netizens Protection Act of 1997," the purpose of which is to amend the Communications Act of 1934 to ban the transmission of unsolicited advertisements by electronic mail, and to require that sender identification information be included with electronic mail messages. With the passing of this bill, recipients of spam will be able to sue the sender for a minimum of $500 for each piece of junk mail! http://www.cauce.org/ Information on this site includes: (1) how to contact your congressman to show support for this bill and why the alternative bills being supported by junk-mailers are not a solution to the spam problem, and (2) how to register a complaint with the FTC if YOU have lost money in a spam scam. Unfortunatetly, the format that you have chosen makes about as much work for your ISP as does spam. Your ISP has to waste resources trying to look up the non-existant address on the left side of the @ sign, and then send a message back to the sender saying "recipient unknown". If you spam block (or "munge" as it is called) your address, "munge" it on the _right_ side of the @ sign; this will cause the _sender's_ mail system waste resources looking up a non-existant domain. Just make sure that, in your munging, you don't accidentally create a domain that actually exists... Spambots are the programs that scan posts for email addresses to generate lists to send email spams to. > And some advice to all: If you are offended by the spam, or just > offended by getting spammed, send a copy to abuse@_your_ isp if they > have this service. This is the host that accepted the spam from the spammers newsreader/poster and it is AFAIK not fakeable. Using abuse@xxx is not universally supported, postmaster@xxx must exist according to RFC-821/822. Also the operator of that machine is either being negligent in accepting anyones posts (and so deserves complaints) or the spammer is one of their customers (and so they can block that customer and possibly sue for breach of acceptable use policy). -- Neil.Franklin.remove@ccw.ch http://www.ccw.ch/Neil.Franklin/ franklin.remove@arch.ethz.ch http://caad.arch.ethz.ch/~franklin/ This computer has 2 cats, one in /bin, one on top purring. ###### Path: ccw.ch!elna.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!ubnnews.unisource.ch!News.Amsterdam.UnisourceCS!newsfeed.mad.ibernet.es!nntp-out.monmouth.com!newspeer.monmouth.com!newsfeed.wli.net!portc04.blue.aol.com!audrey02.news.aol.com!not-for-mail From: gryffin35@aol.com (Gryffin35) Newsgroups: rec.org.sca Subject: Re: New agenda to newsgroup? Ahem--those posts have nothing at all to do with sex. Sex is an *activity* in which one participates with at least one other person who is of a mind to likewise participate and competent to make up said mind in such a manner. What was advertised was nothing but mere pornography, the lowest grade of erotica, which is any form of art that depicts or attempts to elicit sexual arousal. However, neither erotica nor pornography should ever be confused with sex, which is far and away on a higher plane.
