Since the practice of universal badges for an office is not period, and since mundanes don't understand heraldry anyway, might I make a suggestion? How about a simple banner with one word on it that is clear to people inside and out of the Society? The badge 'Vert a key palewise, or' was originally registered by the Barony of Carolingia for their officer in charge of new people, possibly one of the first such offices in the SCA. Later the badge and the term 'Gold Key' came into fairly common use around the SCA. In 1999 or so Carolingia released the badge for general use. Some groups seem to use the badge for the office of Chatelaine/Hospitaller, others use it specifically for loaner garb and equipment or the officer in charge of it. I believe the Society Chatelaine does use the for the office. My understanding of the origins of the word Chatelaine starts with the person in charge of the daily running of a house, keeping everything in order, and then came to refer to the bunch of keys they carried. The bunch later gained scissors, a mirror, and other odds and ends, but still remained a symbol of knowing where everything was and being able to access it. The gold key for Gold Key works quite well.
