Does anyone have a set of instructions as to how to use the thing? I was not at the war, I was loaned the "watch"by the seneschale of my canton in order to see if I could figure out how it worked, but why re-invent the wheel if someone still has their instructions (if they were ever printed). If the instructions are out there, please let me know! Unfortunately, they were done in a rather difficult script to read. There is some information about using these medallions in this file in the TIME section of my Stefan's Florilegium: sundials-msg (23K) 9/12/96 Sundials, making sundials. I have wanted to create a file reprinting the info from the Pennsic booklet and place it in my Florilegium files. However, I will not do that unless I have permission of the original author. At this time, I have not pursued this. My files can be found at: http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/rialto/rialto.html Some folks actually got quite good at using the medallion as a time piece at Pennic XXV. Unfortunately, the first few days of the last week were cloudy and that set back the experimenters a little bit. Stefan -- Lord Stefan li Rous Mark S. From what I read there (I was not at Pennsic to see them) these seem to be the same thing I one saw and was fascinated by, but did not buy because they were of bad quality. This was a ring with engravings on the inside and a hole on the other side. As I live at an higher latitude (47.5°) the Pennsic ones would be useless here. So I have this question: does anyone have plans for how to build one myself, particularly the calculations for arranging the lines and positioning the hole the light shines through (assuming these are of that type of design)? -- private: Neil.Franklin.remove.this@ccw.ch http://www.ccw.ch/Neil.Franklin/ office: franklin.remove.this@arch.ethz.ch http://caad.arch.ethz.ch/~franklin/ Can a Microsoft allergy be claimed on job health insurence? ###### Path: ccw.ch!elna.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news.belnet.be!news.linkline.be!news-raspail.gip.net!news-peer.gip.net!news.gsl.net!gip.net!news-xfer.netaxs.com!nntp.giganews.com!news.giganews.com.POSTED!not-for-mail From: stefan@texas.net (Stefan li Rous) Newsgroups: rec.org.sca Subject: Re: pennsic xxv site token Message-ID: References: <891092804.754757@news.charweb.org> <351FF08C.CB94F126@ccw.ch> Lines: 58 Date: Tue, 31 Mar 1998 07:04:06 GMT NNTP-Posting-Host: 207.207.2.114 NNTP-Posting-Date: Tue, 31 Mar 1998 01:04:06 CST In article <351FF08C.CB94F126@ccw.ch>, Neil.Franklin.remove.this@ccw.ch wrote: > Stefan li Rous wrote: > > In article <891092804.754757@news.charweb.org>, web7989@charweb.org (hank > > harwell) wrote: > > > I have in my possession one of the site tokens from Pennsic XXV, > > > colloquially known as the "cheap gold watch." This was a ring with engravings on the > inside and a hole on the other side. The rings of which you speak are not the Pennsic tokens. I have seen the one you speak of at SCA merchants and in the back of TI. The Pensic medallian is a flat brass plate about three inches square with a set of engravings on one side. You use it with a piece of thread and a small wieght. There are instructions for using the Pensic medalion at different latitudes. I think a message clarifying these corrections is in my file I mentioned above. This file also has referances to books and website for doing the calculations for making different sundials, although I don't think there are directions for the ring sundial of which you speak.
