First, a disclaimer: Revelation is a tough book to understand both because we don't have the same apocalyptic tradition now that they had then and because, frankly, I somewhat sympathize with Neil Gaimen's comment of the author of Revelations: "Nice fellow, somewhat too fond of strange mushrooms, though". So I *am not* going to be drawn into a general discussion. On 666, there is a generally well believed theory about its meaning that I tend to agree with. As far as I know the general form is believed by virtually all scholars, although they disagree about the specific person identified. GENERAL PRINCIPLE: At the time, both greek and hebrew used letters to represent numbers. In Greek the following were used ([] indicate archaic greek letters used only for number, not in regular words). 1 alpha 10 iota 100 rho 2 beta 20 kappa 200 sigma 3 gamma 30 lambda 300 tau 4 delta 40 mu 400 upsilon 5 epsilon 50 nu 500 phi 6 [digamma] 60 xi 600 chi 7 zeta 70 omicron 700 psi 8 eta 80 pi 800 omega 9 theta 90 [koppa] 900 [sampi] Thus a number such as 241 would be rendered sigma mu alpha. Semi-translating, if I wanted to say "buy me 241 pentium 3 computers", I might write it as "buy me sma pentium g computers". Confusing, neh? This makes it possible to code names as numbers. You just do the math, adding up and translating. My first name could go like this: G + R + A + H + A + M = gamma + ro + alpha + eta + alpha + mu = 3 + 100 + 1 + 8 + 1 + 40 = 153 = ro + nu + gamma = RNG (Paranthetically, another number much discussed for hidden meaning is the 153 fishes caught in a net in one of the gospels) The same system is possible with Hebrew. Was this actually common at the time? Evidence indicates so - for example some graffitti in Pompeii reads "I love her whose number is 545". John also says about the number "it is the number of a man" and also "let him who has understanding calculate the number", giving strong support to this theory. Revelation is full of allusion and veiled reference -- John was likely writing from prison and wasn't in a good position to write, for example "down with Rome! Caeser is the antichrist!" SPECIFIC PERSON: Using Greek or Hebrew we can uncode the name as any of: Titan, Roman, Gaius Caesar, Neron Caesar, Caesar of Rome or Trajan Note that NERON CAESAR (Greek form) adds up to 666, whereas NERO CAESAR(latin form) adds up to 616, and that alternative early copies of Revelation have 616 as the number of the beast (look in your bible's footnotes!), so my personal feeling is that Nero is the target. CONCLUSION 666 is almost certainly a coded reference to an actual name. It's probably someone who it would have been dangerous to name openly. Nero seems a good candidate. John's audience likely knew exactly who he meant. It's more likely a first-century AD reference than an end-of-days reference (though maybe it serves a dual purpose). For a Christian: Ignore it. It's not of any practical use for day to day living and may not be even slightly relevant anymore. For Roleplayers: using a scheme like this might be a nice hook for a puzzle, either in a fantasy world, a dark conspiracy world, call of Cthulhu, or even a sci-fi setting: "... beware the one known as RNG, for he hath the power to change shape into other man's bodies ..." But what I want to know is how there comes to be a 666 on every bar code (look at the 3 pairs of parallel lines that tell the scanner where the code starts & stops). Now compare this to Rev 13:17, which says that no man would be able to *buy or sell* without the mark of the beast. Was this a deliberate design decision on the part of the bar code's inventor? The white bars are significant too... the guard bars aren't the same as 6's (otherwise the scanner would be confused by them, and stop at 6's). "THE EAN-13 barcode system is used in 85 countries, making it the most popular of its kind in the world. It works by using thirteen numbers, each one represented by seven vertical lines. The seven lines are either black or white, making a pattern which is recognised as a particular digit when scanned by a computer. "Contrary to popular myth, no bar code includes the number 666. This belief arose from the number six being represented by what appears to be a similar pattern to that used to inform the scanner where the guard bars (lines representing the start, middle and end of the bar code) are located. If you look closely at a six on a bar code, you will see that there is a wide white bar either to the left or the right (dependent on where the number is positioned), which is not the case with the guard bars." http://www.snopes.com/spoons/fracture/barcode.htm (Of course, I work in the banking industry, so I'm one of Them and you can't believe me anyway.) -- Karen Cravens (silver@phoenyx.net) Phoenyx Play-by-Email Roleplaying - http://www.phoenyx.net/ Phoenyx PBeM Banner Exchange - http://www.phoenyx.net/bp/ ###### Message-ID: <38E316DF.1FFC@nospam.tyndale.apana.org.au> From: Brett Evill X-Mailer: Mozilla 3.01 (Macintosh; I; 68K) MIME-Version: 1.0 Newsgroups: rec.games.frp.misc Subject: Re: 666 (was: RPGs) References: <8bh6r5$6c7$1@nnrp1.deja.com> <8F04A2D2Cbkahlernetscapenet@10.10.1.11> <38e1a59b.5998550@nntp.pbtcomm.net> <38E23ED4.A12D30A3@research.bell-labs.com> <38e27adc.4558441@news.powernet.co.uk> <8F06BA434phoenyx@206.53.111.136> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Lines: 13 Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2000 18:57:04 +1000 NNTP-Posting-Host: 202.12.90.168 X-Trace: ozemail.com.au 954406620 202.12.90.168 (Thu, 30 Mar 2000 18:57:00 EST) NNTP-Posting-Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2000 18:57:00 EST Organization: OzEmail Pty Ltd, Australia Distribution: world Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news-ge.switch.ch!newsfeed.berkeley.edu!newsfeed.concentric.net!newsfeed.ozemail.com.au!ozemail.com.au!not-for-mail Xref: chonsp.franklin.ch rec.games.frp.misc:1821 Karen J. Of course you're a foreigner: you talk funny, after all, right? Got the same accent as them Australians, right? There you have it. Of course you're one of Them. Lookit all the Hollywood movie villains with British accents. (Though I'm not sure you qualify if you stay over there. Once you cross the ocean, though, you've confirmed it. That's the advantage of being employment-qualified: I don't have to leave home (well, except to drive two miles to HQ) to be The Enemy.) -- Karen Cravens (silver@phoenyx.net) Phoenyx Play-by-Email Roleplaying - http://www.phoenyx.net/ Phoenyx PBeM Banner Exchange - http://www.phoenyx.net/bp/
