Most beautiful, most realistic, best illustrated? I like Tolkien's maps -- particularly his map of Wilderland in The Hobbit and the map of the Shire in The Lord of the Rings -- but I think the large-scale map suffers from being a bit too plain and under-detailed. I like Le Guin's map of Earthsea, but I think again it suffers from some lack of detail for the specific islands, though it's good as a nautical chart. I think the maps in E.R. Eddison's Mistress of Mistresses are very attractively done, though they cover a rather small area. Pauline Baynes' maps of Narnia are very attractive -- and as far as Narnia itself goes, close to Lewis' original sketch -- but of course are more illustration than cartography. I didn't think that her layout of the islands in the eastern sea fit the voyage of the _Dawn Treader_ very well. There are of course a host of fantasy maps illustrating the myriad fantasy paperbacks that get published every year; I'm not very familiar with many of them, but some are of pretty low quality, barely more than doodles. Could anybody recommend a book - regardless of the quality of the writing itself - that has a really nicely-drawn map? Could anybody recommend a book - regardless of the quality of >the writing itself - that has a really nicely-drawn map? I like the map of Einarinn in Juliet E McKenna's "Tales of Einarinn" - it's up on my wall (actually, technically the ceiling since I'm in an attic !) alongside the enlarged map of Middle-earth that I drew some 15 or 16 years ago (I copied the ME map onto an A4 page then overlaid a grid and enlarged it to A3 size)... What I like best about the map of Einarinn is that it develops over the course of the 5 Tales - extra places get marked onto the outlined map between books 1 and 5 - it's quite interesting to see the development of the map alongside the development of the stories...
