He showed me a poem of several pages and a last chapter of Lord of the Rings - Return of the King. Can't remember the poem. Last chapter was something about Samwise getting an invitation from the King (i.c. Aragorn) to join some party, while his wife had to stay at home with 6 or more children. Now I know my mind at that time was clouded with beer, cannabis and other stuff I can;t remember. But - as far as I can remember - the poem and chapter at that time seemed genuine. Hell, I even have a poster somewhere around here with another (unpublished in LOTR) poem called "Bilbo's last song", with some curly-feeted hobbits drawed at the Grey Havens. I remember it was given to me as a gift back then. The latter is physic proof. I was wondering if my memory serves me well and the story of the chapter and the long poem are true... Or is this something that made me really get my tits of the booze and the drugs at that time? Sent this question to a.f.t. also.. TIA for the response... ###### From: "Aris Katsaris" Newsgroups: rec.arts.books.tolkien Subject: Re: Unpublished chapter by Tolkien that has been known of? Not exactly: it was an invitation by the King for Sam's entire family to come join him -- Rose and the kids wouldn't stay behind. There are two different version of this Epilogue, which was indeed written by J.R.R. Tolkien - you can read both of them in "Sauron Defeated" which is the 9th volume in the History of Middle-earth series. This epilogue's inclusion was in the end rejected, though a reference to the event still remains in the timeline found in the end of ROTK, in the year 1436. > Now I know my mind at that time was clouded with beer, cannabis and other > stuff I can;t remember. I've seen that song also. Not sure what book you can find it in, but it's not in "History of Middle Earth", I know that. It was set to music in the second edition of 'The Road Goes >Ever On' > > Simon ************************************************ Allen and Unwin published the first edition of Bilbo's Last Song in 1974. That same year, the first U.S. edition of the poem was not in a book but in a puzzle. The puzzle shows an illustration by Pauline Baynes: the three hobbits as they stand on a hill overlooking the Havens and watch the ship sail away. The poem and the picture are two of my favorites. Perhaps the poster you have is the same scene? sharon> ###### From: "Simon J. Rowe" Subject: Re: Unpublished chapter by Tolkien that has been known of? Actually, I just checked in Hammond's and Anderson's Desscriptive Bilbliography and we are both wrong. That's what I get for spouting off the top of my head without looking here first! The poem was first published 1n 1974 as a poster -- 105,000 copies by Houghton Mifflin, and an unknown number by Allen & Unwin. Two years later it appeared as a jig saw puzzle, the one I have. The actual book put out by Unwin Hyman and illustrated by Baynes did not appear till 1990 with 6,000 copies as well as another Canadian edition, a book club edition and 10,000 copies put out by Houghton Mifflin in the U.S. that same year.
