Unfortunately, lembas is kind of hard to come by these days, so I, like countless others, have had to live in the vain hope that someday I would be able to eat the waybread of the elves. Well, on a recent trip to the grocery store, I was very surprised to see an aisle full of lembas! I couldn't believe my eyes! I knew it was lembas because there were elves depicted on the packaging. And the variety was amazing: there was plain lembas, lembas covered in chocolate, lembas covered in coconut, and even lembas shaped like little animals. Of course, I had to buy a package of each variety. I couldn't wait to get home and finally taste the lembas I've always dreamed of eating. However, if you're thinking of rushing to the grocery store to buy some of this newly available lembas for yourself, I just want to warn you: THIS IS NOT AUTHENTIC LEMBAS. I was very disappointed to find this out. I was brimming with anticipation as I opened the packaging, but I noticed something wrong right away: the wafers were not wrapped in mallorn leaves. As we all know, lembas loses its sustaining qualities and becomes stale a few days after being removed from its wrapping; yet the lembas in the grocery store was packaged without it. The lembas did taste quite good. I really enjoyed the lembas coated in coconut. However, I noticed that it had no special sustaining qualities whatsoever. In fact, I found the lembas to be hardly nourishing at all, whereas a traveler can survive for days on a single loaf of real lembas. I suspected a scam, so I did some research on the company that produced the fake lembas, the Keebler Company. I spoke to a company spokeswoman--she told me that no elves participated in the manufacturing of the lembas (although it was kind of hard to understand her, as she was laughing hysterically, obviously because I had been tricked by their scam). The lembas is actually manufactured in a factory, like any old processed food, and all the factory workers are human. This is despite the fact that elves are depicted on the packaging, and that there are television advertisements (I've heard--never saw one myself) showing elves baking the lembas. Unfortunately, it appears that this lie about how the lembas is made is legal. But even if it is legal, I don't understand why the Keebler Company feels the need to misrepresent how its products are made. To summarize, this new "lembas" is not wrapped in mallorn leaves, does not have good sustaining qualities, and is not made by elves. In other words, it isn't really lembas. So it looks like I, and countless others, will have to keep waiting for real lembas. And one word of advice to my fellow husbands: do not think your wife will be happy to see you bring home two dozen packages of lembas (even if it is real), especially if she's on the Atkin's diet. Man, I'll tell you, my wife went bananas when she saw all that lembas, and she really, really got mad when I told her why I bought it. She said things like, "I know LSD users with a better grip on reality than you!!" Like, how was I supposed to know it was a scam? I guess some people just aren't interested in the experience. -- CARL BANKS ###### From: "The American" Newsgroups: rec.sport.football.college,rec.arts.books.tolkien Subject: Re: Lembas Consumer Warning Date: Fri, 3 Jan 2003 09:16:56 -0500 Organization: Posted via Supernews, http://www.supernews.com Message-ID: References: X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.50.4920.2300 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4920.2300 X-Complaints-To: abuse@supernews.com Lines: 21 Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news.mailgate.org!news-spur1.maxwell.syr.edu!news.maxwell.syr.edu!sn-xit-03!sn-xit-01!sn-post-01!supernews.com!corp.supernews.com!not-for-mail Xref: chonsp.franklin.ch rec.arts.books.tolkien:106676 "Carl Banks" wrote in message news:vI8R9.59182$Jb.23005@nwrddc02.gnilink.net... > > If you're anything like me, you've wanted to taste lembas ever since > reading The Lord of the Rings.
