I think you might enjoy reading it. Öjevind Last night I had the distinct pleasure of watching FotR with my dad. My dad is the kind of guy who enjoys the movies where stuff blows up a lot and lots of people get killed in nasty and imaginative ways. His favorite stars are Steven Seagal, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Sly Stallone and other 'classics'. He also is the kind of guy who likes to know what happens in a movie before it actually does. So when I suggested to him if he wanted to see FotR he asked if there's lots of action in it. I told him there was, but the movie was three hours long. He never had a problem with the suspension of disbelief, so the fact that the movie was full of prancing Elves and little dudes with hairy feet was a non-issue. As long as stuff blows up and people die. So I popped in the DVD expecting he will enjoy only the action and purdy pictures, but lo and behold, my dad cared about the story. He had of course heard of LotR and all that book stuff, but never read it himself. Here are some of the more priceless moments: 'So, what's the deal with this ring?' - An honest question during the prologue 'Why does Sauron wear the ring on his index finger?' - a factual error spotted. [Shot of the ring around Isildur's neck] 'So, now he has the ring, right?' [Orc jumps Isildur] 'Oh, fuck...he just got it (the ring), man...' 'Who is the little one?' - Frodo's first appearance 'What's with the old guy?' - About Gandalf 'So the other guy is dead by now, right?' - Upon learning that Frodo is related to Bilbo (other guy = Bilbo) 'How come he's not dead? It's been 60 years!!! He was old already!' - Seeing Bilbo again 'So the ring can make you invisible. Does the little one know?' - Frodo got the ring for the first time. 'Is he gonna put it on? He's gotta put it on some time!' - about Frodo and the ring 'So does the old guy also have a ring?' - Middle-earth history 101 'What happened to the other rings?' - Advanced Middle-earth history 'The guys on horses also have rings, right?' - it's happening slowly 'And they want to take the ring from the little dude for themselves.' - hmmm... 'Is he gonna put it on, is he, is he?' - Hobbits hide under the tree from the Nazgul 'Man, these guys are badass!' - The Nazgul impress my dad 'How come they know he has the ring?' - more Middle-earth history 'Oh, fuck! They didn't kill them, did they?' - Nazgul stab the empty beds. 'Who are they again?' - About Nazgul, just seconds before Aragorn explains who they are. 'Didn't he explode?' - just learning Sauron is the one wanting the ring back. 'What the...? They were friends! What's goin on?' - Saruman and Gandalf duke it out. 'I don't care how powerful you are, only way from there is to jump to your death!' - Assessing Gandalf's situation on top of Orthanc 'Why are they cutting down the trees?' - Getting ahead of oneself again 'Is he dead?' - Frodo is stabbed by the Witch-King 'So, she is the daughter of the guy who was yelling orders at the beginning, right?' - Arwen's secret identity revealed. 'What? Are they afraid of little water?' - Stand-off at the Ford 'Who's that? Sean Connery?' - Gandalf speaks off screen 'Does he have a ring too?' - facts about Elrond 'Who are they?' - People come to the Council of Elrond 'The old geezer has lost it completely...' - Bilbo tries to take the ring from Frodo again. 'They're all going with him, A'RIGHT!!!' - The joy of watching the movies 'So where are they going?' - Pippin revisited 'If the old guy is so powerful, why doesn't he just take the ring and destroys it?' - Aft, anyone? 'I'm sure he won't be able to destroy the ring, something will come up.' - ending is spoiled 'He's GOT to be dead NOW!' - Cave Troll stabs Frodo. 'WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?' - Enter the Balrog 'On, no...they're all dead now...' - Gandalf falls to his doom 'Is she evil?' - Enter Galadriel 'So the ring refused to go to her...' - eh, dad? you're holding it upside down 'What do you mean there is no ending? I want to know what happens next now!!! What? Three movies...' - the movie ends I very much enjoyed watching it with my dad. For a first view, it's a pain - but I'm afraid I grew up with a father who...... *talks a lot during movies* too (mum refused to go to the cinema with him again after he stood up and cheered for the 7th Cavalry) But they used to say that TV and the Movies were killing the art of conversation - not in my dad's house they aren't! :-) -- Jette (aka Vinyaduriel) "Work for Peace and remain fiercely loving" - Jim Byrnes jette@blueyonder.co.uk http://www.jette.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ http://bosslady.tripod.com/fanfic.html ###### From: "Öjevind Lång" Newsgroups: alt.fan.tolkien,rec.arts.books.tolkien References: <3D674ADF.C4E6D08E@nospam.solinas.org> Subject: Re: Watching the Film With Dad Lines: 15 X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2600.0000 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2600.0000 Message-ID: NNTP-Posting-Host: 213.101.77.133 X-Complaints-To: news-abuse@swip.net X-Trace: nntpserver.swip.net 1030348324 213.101.77.133 (Mon, 26 Aug 2002 09:52:04 MET DST) NNTP-Posting-Date: Mon, 26 Aug 2002 09:52:04 MET DST Organization: A Customer of Tele2 X-Sender: -@d213-101-77-133.swipnet.se Date: Mon, 26 Aug 2002 09:53:30 +0200 Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news-ge.switch.ch!news.tele.dk!small.news.tele.dk!192.71.180.34!newsfeed1.swip.net!swipnet!nntpserver.swip.net!not-for-mail Xref: chonsp.franklin.ch rec.arts.books.tolkien:93386 "Darth Quokka" wrote: [snip] > Next time you plan on seeing a fillum with good 'ol Dad... > Take a thick roll of cellotape, and tape up his face to stop the noise > coming out...
