I've long considered the following image as a possible source or influence
on Tolkien's map of Middle-earth:

This image is from Donald A. MacKenzie's _Ancient Man in Britain_ (London:
Blackie & Son Limited, 1922), and titled "Western Europe During the Third
Inter-glacial Epoch" (p. 17). It would be very surprising if Tolkien weren't
familiar with this book.
