All I can say is WOW, that was good. I'm not a purist, it seems.. or the purists that are grousing are so blinded by their extremism that they can't recognize an excellent masterpiece on its own merits, without a slavish need to regurgitate the books that would frankly damage the films. Jackson altered quite a bit.. but not having done so would have seriously damaged the story's continuity.. leaving us with an enhanced Bashki.. I don't think anyone wants that. A few points: - Caradhras "attack" being summoned by Saruman himself. I thought that this was EXCELLENT, and made a ton of sense. Saruman at least has some knowledge of what's going on and the path the Fellowship means to take. It never made sense to me that Sauron himself would know where they are without pursuing them... would Nazgūl fear snow? I don't think so. - Pretty obvious that there will be no 'Scouring..' in TRotK. For one, Samwise doesn't look in Galadriel's mirror.. he's not even in the scene. For two, Frodo never sells Bag End. For three, no time is spent on the Shire other than just enough to show it as a peaceful and pastoral land where the Hobbits are as they should be. I could go on all night.. that was, without question, the best movie I have ever seen, eclipsing quite a lot of amazing movies I've been able to view. I predict MANY Academy Awards for this one, including Best Film of the Year, unless the Academy pulls their usual crap and gives it to another "film" like The Piano. ;) And to think, they told me "sold out" when I went to the box office. I don't give up so easily.. logged on and was back in the theater in 10 minutes with my ticket, just in time for the trailers. ;) -- ____ _________________ \ \ / / Virginia Tech Hokies \ \ / ____ _____/ The Class of the Big East \ \ / / / / \ \/ / / / Bryan S. According to Harry Knowles' interview with Peter Jackson: "They handle it a bit differently than in the book (no follow up on that) but that it does take place and is seen." According to screenwriter Philippa Boyens: "Unfortunately, as wonderful and brilliant as that last chapter is, it's not something we believe our film could sustain. You can't have a huge climax that your main characters have been striving for, for three films, and then start the story up again and play out an episodic ending. An audience sitting in the cinema just wouldn't go for it.". The scouring is in, in one form or another, but most likely very different from how it's presented in the book.
