Staffs of Mana Storm and Starburst also do good damage but not enough to really be useful for the slots they take. Saruman's wand and Radagast's Staff were pretty useless all in all. e) 3 Gold Rings of Nether Resistance f) The Ring of Tulkas (+4) g) The Ring of Power (Nenya) (+2) I left this at home for the final battle as I couldn't see where I would want to swap it in when Morgy was around (I only had +24 speed hasted) h) The Necklace of the Dwarves (+3) i) The Torque of Boromir (+0,+18) (+2) This was worn a lot mid-game after Ringil was found and when i needed to melee. the choice between this and faramir was decided by Ringil's high to hit bonus j) The Amulet of Faramir (+18,+0) (+2) {ii} k) The Multi-Hued Dragon Scale Mail 'Razorback' (-4) [30,+25] at 40 lbs this was way too heavy, otherwise it might have been useful l) The Hard Leather Armour of Antingon [6,+20] (+2) m) The Leather Scale Mail 'Thalkettoth' (-1) [11,+25] (+3) both of these were also too heavy! the only thing not subtracting mana for me was the robe n) The Large Leather Shield of Lions [6,+18] (+2) o) The Golden Crown of Gondor [0,+18] (+3) p) The Hard Leather Cap of Thranduil [2,+10] (+2) q) The Set of Leather Gloves 'Thauruial' (+8,+8) [1,+12] {RNether} This induced random teleport, or i would have swapped it in for cambeleg and worn the necklace of the dwarves and the other artifact boots. Angband is a freeware roguelike game, which is based off UMoria (Unix Moria) which is based off PC-Moria, which is based off VDM-Moria, which is based off Rogue, which is based off Dungeons & Dragons. Official Angband (`vanilla' Angband) has a strong basis in Tolkien's work's, and is also influenced, to a lesser extent, by AD&D. The ultimate object of the game is to kill Sauron and Morgoth. Along the way, one will find various artifacts weapons and armours which are taken from the works of Tolkien (the best being the Long Sword `Ringil'). Of this particular variant I have not played much, but its rebalancing of non-magical combat. Many of the other variants are based off the works of specific authors, and the author in question is mixed in with Tolkien's works, with interesting results. Authors such as Lovecraft in Cthulu Angband, Zelazny's Amber Universe in ZAngband, Anne McCaffery's P.E.R.N. (Planet Earth, Resources Neglibible) in PernAngband, Moordock's _Eternal Champion_ in GumBand, Edding's Belgariad in SBFBand, and one which attempts to be more Tolkienian (GSNBand). All of the variants reflect the personal beliefs of the variant maintainer in how the game should be played, but vanilla Angband is always there for a stabilising influence. At last count, which was three weeks ago, there were thirty-eight Angband variants, including vanilla Angband. There are many reasons for this. One of the reasons is that Angband is programmed in C, a language which is fairly easy to pick up. Another is that there are no copyrights on it, and major efforts are being made to get Angband to be protected under the GNU General Public License, which means that it could be included in many other freeware products like Linux. Yet another reason is due to the previous maintainer, Ben Harrison, who cleaned up a code which he described as `an unholy mess' (Ben Harrison's History of Standard Angband). This effort has resulted in vanilla Angband being one of the cleanest 800,000+ lines of C code, and some computer courses are using it as an example of how to programme. This effort has been continued by the current maintainer, Robert Ruelmann, who is also, IIRC, the chairperson of the ZAngband DevTeam. Most of the variants of Angband can be downloaded from http://thangorodrim.angband.org or from ftp://clockwork.dementia.org/ , and there is a Usenet newsgroup at rec.games.roguelike.angband. I must warn you, however, that Angband has many of the effects of an addictive drug (including withdrawal), so be prepared to spend a lot of time on it! --Skylar Thompson (skylar@attglobal.net) `All that is gold does not glitter/Not all who wander are lost The old that is strong does not wither/Deep roots are not reached by the frost From the ashes a fire shall be woken/A light from the shadows shall spring Renewed shall be blade that was broken/The crownless again shall be king.' ###### From: wilbur07@aol.com Newsgroups: rec.arts.books.tolkien Subject: Re: [O] Cheating Win Date: Tue, 16 Jan 2001 00:17:53 GMT Organization: Deja.com Lines: 266 Message-ID: <9403vb$e1h$1@nnrp1.deja.com> References: <20010115040202.26021.00000254@ng-fy1.aol.com> NNTP-Posting-Host: 209.10.38.193 X-Article-Creation-Date: Tue Jan 16 00:17:53 2001 GMT X-Http-User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0; Windows NT; DigExt) X-Http-Proxy: 1.1 x67.deja.com:80 (Squid/1.1.22) for client 209.10.38.193 X-MyDeja-Info: XMYDJUIDwilbur07 Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news-ge.switch.ch!news.tele.dk!4.1.16.34!cpk-news-hub1.bbnplanet.com!news.gtei.net!news.maxwell.syr.edu!nntp2.deja.com!nnrp1.deja.com!not-for-mail Xref: chonsp.franklin.ch rec.arts.books.tolkien:31154 Oops! wrong newsgroup -- meant to post in rec.games.roguelike.angband . There is a whole news group dedicated to it, rec.games.roguelike.angband You can download the vanilla Angband and lots of other variants from . Try it, you'll love it! You might be interested of Moria[2] too, it is an older and simpler Middle-earth based roguelike game. I don't know any download urls for it, but there's a newsgroup rec.games.roguelike.moria Entries from the Jargon File, a collection of hackers' jargon [1] From Jargon File (4.0.0/24 July 1996) [jargon]: rogue /n./ [Unix] A Dungeons-and-Dragons-like game using character graphics, written under BSD Unix and subsequently ported to other Unix systems. The original BSD `curses(3)' screen-handling package was hacked together by Ken Arnold to support `rogue(6)' and has since become one of Unix's most important and heavily used application libraries. Nethack, Omega, Larn, and an entire subgenre of computer dungeon games all took off from the inspiration provided by `rogue(6)'. See also {nethack}. [2] This is what the Jargon File says about Moria. From Jargon File (4.0.0/24 July 1996) [jargon]: moria /mor'ee-*/ /n./ Like {nethack} and {rogue}, one of the large PD Dungeons-and-Dragons-like simulation games, available for a wide range of machines and operating systems. The name is from Tolkien's Mines of Moria; compare {elder days}, {elvish}. The game is extremely addictive and a major consumer of time better used for hacking. -- |---+ Me lyhyen matematiikan lukijat voimme joutua karsimaan Vakaumuksemme | vuoksi, he voivat saada meidat nakemaan vilua ja nalkaa mutta | henkeamme he eivat saa kahlittua! Correction: Software does not need to be GPL to be included with Linux. Many important parts of Linux (the entire windowing system for one!, many Internet Server packages) are non-GPL. A few Linux Distributors (those people that make the CD-ROMs) have a policy of not including non-free software. But some even include license-requiring commercial software (Adabas in SUSE Linux). > Yet another reason is due to the previous maintainer, Ben Harrison, > who cleaned up a code which he described as `an unholy mess' (Ben > Harrison's History of Standard Angband).
