The project took the form of introducing 20 Balrogs on the little island of Bozo, about 50 kilometres from the island of Malta itself. The idea was that the Balrogs would be able to mate and raise their young undisturbed on the very secluded, almost bare island, drinking the fresh water in its springs but flying to Malta for needed food. Needless to say, the project failed, due to the abysmal ignorance of the real nature of Balrogs exhibited by the WWF. The last of the Balrogs, a buck, was found drowned two weeks ago; apparently, after having devoured its young, and even its beloved pink fluffy slippers, it had tried to swim to Malta to find more food. Sad story indeed. But luckily, there´s still hope for Balrogs. At least according to a documentary I saw on TV few weeks ago, which was about a similar project going on in Colorado, USA. I missed the early parts of the program, but apparently a group of Balrog- infants born in captivity, were raised in a Balrogs nest-like enviroment, to be released in the nature, when they were able to cope alone. All human contacts were avoided, so that Balrog´s would not lose their natural wrath for mankind. For this purpose, the young Balrogs were fed by a hand- puppet, which looked like an adult Balrog, and was set on fire just before feeding time. The biologist responsible for feeding duty said the experience was painful, but very rewarding. At the end of the documentary came a heart-warming moment, when Balrogs were released to the nature, by throwing them over the edge, into the Grand Canyon. The film-crew was to return after a month to do another documentary about how Balrogs have domesticated to their new home. Morgil
