I was curious as to when the LotR was to have taken place? I know there are different "reckonings" mentioned throughout the books. But was the true time ever mentioned? If so, when? Thanks.... ###### From: Flame of the West Newsgroups: rec.arts.books.tolkien Subject: Re: Reckoning? I just listened to an interview with Tolkien (a recording of an old one, not a seance or anything) and he referred to the events as having happened about 7 or 8 thousand years ago. I guess the point was to put it well before recorded history, during which the Elves and the Valar have been only a vague and distorted memory. -- -- FotW Reality is for those who cannot cope with Middle-Earth. ###### From: Ermanna Newsgroups: rec.arts.books.tolkien Subject: Re: Reckoning? In one of the Letters, Tolkien said that the Ages were shorter after the Third Age (which was about 3020 years long), and that we are today in the Fifth or Sixth. So you can work it out from that. The problem with reading that letter too literally is to decide what events might have ended the Ages. Tolkien would probably have put the career of Jesus as one, but that leaves one or two unaccounted for. Perhaps WW1 would be another: that did indeed bring to an end a whole way of life across Europe, as well as killing many millions. -- Stan Brown, Oak Road Systems, Cleveland, Ohio, USA http://oakroadsystems.com Tolkien FAQs: http://home.uchicago.edu/~sbjensen/Tolkien Encyclopedia of Arda: http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/default.htm more FAQs: http://oakroadsystems.com/tech/faqget.htm ###### From: johnnybravo58@hotmail.com (Johnny Firic) Newsgroups: rec.arts.books.tolkien Subject: Re: Reckoning?
