For it is said that, if mortals eat often of this bread, they become weary of their mortality, desiring to abide among the Elves, and longing to the fields of Aman, to which they can't come. Essay Of Lembas, Peoples of Middle-earth There has been some talk about Frodo going to Aman between Prembone and some other members and although they do not wish to rewaken the describedly heated debate that has before been beaten to death. I just thought to ask if Prembone had read this passage, and if so, then what weight did she give to it. -- >Jukka näemmä vähän kämmäsi tuossa... Juu, ajattelin tehdä tämän vuosituhannen virheeni mahdollisimman nopeasti, ettei se sitten satu mihinkään vakavampaan yhteyteen (tai jää kokonaan tekemättä, kuten viimeksi kävi). -- Jukka Korpela ###### From: Flame of the West Newsgroups: rec.arts.books.tolkien Subject: Re: Of Lembas - and why Frodo went to Aman Date: Sun, 09 Jul 2000 10:05:35 -0400 Lines: 39 Message-ID: <3968869E.9B9E3026@erols.com> References: Reply-To: jsolinas@erols.com Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Trace: i2a1HyC2O5p+ye6sPtVL4cSkjXymqSPOcI33AIDWrbQ= X-Complaints-To: abuse@rcn.com NNTP-Posting-Date: 9 Jul 2000 14:09:48 GMT X-Accept-Language: en X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.5 (Macintosh; I; PPC) Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news-ge.switch.ch!enews.sgi.com!news-peer.gip.net!news.gsl.net!gip.net!howland.erols.net!outgoing.news.rcn.net.MISMATCH!feed1.news.rcn.net!rcn!not-for-mail Xref: chonsp.franklin.ch rec.arts.books.tolkien:23160 "Juho P. Frodo and Sam depended on their lembas much more and much longer than the other mortal members of the Fellowship, and they both went over Sea. Indeed, Sam at the end of the Epilogue was troubled by the calling of the Sea, which is completely consistent with the above passage. I've always thought that even had he not been wounded, Frodo would still eventually have gone over Sea. After all, Sam was not wounded, and went over toward the end of his life. I suspect Frodo would have also, partly because of the lembas, and partly because he himself had grown to be so "Elvish." His allusion to his wounds are explaining to Sam why Frodo was choosing to go so soon. BTW, this illustrates why we shouldn't be afraid to rehash old arguments: there's always some point we'd missed. I think we can overdo this "we've already been through that" sentiment, given that the composition of the NG keeps changing. -- -- FotW Reality is for those who cannot cope with Middle-Earth.
