He learned alot from his father-in-law > (who DID work with Aule), but not from the big smith himself. I figured he'd ask why they couldn't be just a *little* taller... :) Anyway, one cannot blame Aule for Sauron and Saruman. Sure, Sauron was Aule's apprentice at first, but Morgoth tempted him away. Morgoth was always jealous of Aule, as it is written in the Silmarillion: "Melkor was jealous of him, for Aule was most like himself in thought and in powers; and there was long strife between them...". Both were fascinated with creating things, and both held much knowledge. Sauron was tempted away by promises of greater power and so forth, which was not Aule's fault, for he refused to partake of anything evil. Saruman wasn't corrupted until after he had arrived in Middle-Earth, far away from Aule. I don't think Aule chose his apprentices poorly. Rather, I think his craft was the most susceptible to temptation, for creation is Iluvatar's work. Nothing original is made except through his agency, and it is this sole control over original creation that separates him from all other beings. Nonetheless, a being like Melkor eventually loses sight of the fact that his creation is always connected at some point to Iluvatar, and always redounds to Iluvatar's thoughts. Once one loses sight of that humbling check, it is a simple step to thinking of oneself as truly a god. Thus, it is not surprising that Melkor, Sauron, Feanor, Saruman, and so on fell into evil ways. It *is* surprising that Aule never did. Neither did Celebrimbor, although I suppose some will argue that his obsession for ring-lore blinded him to Sauron's deceptions, but that is not the same as saying he himself fell into evil ways. -- ****************************************************** The Opal Dragon To E-mail me, remove 'SPAM BLOCK' from return address. ###### From: "O. Personally, I am not into facial hair on women. In fact, here in North America, it is commonly thought that any hair on a women other than on her scalp is quite obscene. What would Gimli think of that? Masked Man----->Hmmm, this may be somewhat difficult. In other newsgroups I frequent, to "perv" the remark of a poster is to respond to that remark in an off-color, ribald, sometimes profane way, having construed the remark to be in the same vein. When I tell you, I will not perv your remark I am using irony to say I will make an off-color remark about your comment by saying I will =not= make an off-color remark about your comment. -- Who was that masked man? ###### From: wilbur07@aol.com Newsgroups: rec.arts.books.tolkien Subject: Re: Call for Speculation Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 22:35:28 GMT Organization: Deja.com - Before you buy.
