Hmm, there is a myriad of characters I'd like to be. If we limit to LotR then it would be either Sam or Faramir. Sam, well, Sam is wise, sticks to Frodo to the end, loves trees and what is best, in the end he gets an easy job, wife and lotsa beautiful children + gets to go to Aman, too. Faramir on the other hand is intelligent, learned, powerful leader of men and generally my favourite character of the big people. But if we look back to ages one and two, then I'd pick Beren. He is an easy pick, the biggest hero of them all. He steals the Silmaril, returns from dead and weds the most beautiful elven womman ever. Not exactly what I'd call an easy life, but I guess it'd be worth it. >PS: If you nominate anyone else aside from me >I'll personally turn you into a toad. That does it, off my list you go. He got to see the glory of the First Age. He was King of the Noldor in exile, but didn't partake in all that nasty kinslaying buisness. Yes, he died at the end of the 2nd Age, but he died fighting Sauron. Not an unheroic death. Not to mention he lived for Approx. 3,500 yrs. Not bad. No, no, no, NO! You can't - let me repeat - you can't call Sam a "a simple little fellow". Sam is sturdy gardener and by no means is he simple[1]. Sometimes he may be a bit slow, but I'd say that he is quite intelligent, although his formal education is nil. But all in all you are right. Sam is The Hero. Sam is The Hero. His formal education was nil? He was taught how to read and write by one of the Shire's foremost scholars: Bilbo Baggins. He also learned many of the tales of the Elder Days - in which he was doubtless instructed by Elrond & other elves during his time in Rivendell. He also probably learned a lot of lore from Gandalf during their travels. He was a craftsman skilled in the art of rope-making. He was acknowledged as a first-rate chef. And last, but not least, he was an agricultural specialist {American-speak for "gardener"] of the finest repuation. Samwise Gamgee was probably better educated than any other hobbit of his economic status in the Shire. Let me add that I've always admired Sam too although his rather close-minded approach to life occasionally grated on me. All in all, though, I would have gladly shared a few dangerous journeys with him. Mnkohrz. ###### From: pahis@voimax.cygnnet.jkl.fi (Juho P. He had just picked it up from here and there. Yes, to the best of my knowledge, the Shire did not possess any schools (or at least as we know them). Perhaps the libraries at Brandy Hall and the Great Smials of the Tooks served this purpose? Even if there were no schools, however, Sam's education can be considered formal because he was an apprentice even if his "master" was his own father. I agree with you, tho, that he acquired much of his education informally. Mnkohrz
