Translates officially to Federation of the Helvetic states (26 of them). The name is in Latin, because the various states have 4 different official languages (german, french, italian, rumantsch), so Latin was good neutral territory. I only know that the Name Helvetia (no c, that was a typo) is in Latin. I also know that it already existed in the days of Julius Caesar (first century before Christ) when the people of the Helvetii (living in Switzerland, after immigration from Germany) tried to emigrate to Gallia (today France) and collided with Caesars Army that was just there fighting the Gallians (somewhere around Lyon). The Helvetii were badly beaten and sent back home, together with an Roman occupation army. The town where I live started as a Roman fort called Vitudurum, later thransliterated in the early middle ages in multiple steps to Winterthur. So I assume it to be an old Germanic Name. Anyone here know Germanic word stems? Actually the word hell derives from the name of the germanic goddess of the underwold, Hel. > In Finnish hell is helvetti and the word helvetica looks a lot > like helvetti. Neat. :-) Word changing to an totally different meaning in other languages can be so entertaining. There are a few names in Tolkien (yipee, back on topic) that are quite amusing. The Quenya Telep-orno mentioned in one of the other threads today is a super example (and it is even in Unfinished Tales, where this thread started :-)). And seeing you also using Linux: greetings to Finland, thanks for it. -- Neil Franklin, neil@franklin.ch.remove http://neil.franklin.ch/ Nerd, Geek, Hacker, Unix Guru, Sysadmin, Roleplayer, LARPer, Mystic Use a WIMP (Windows Icons Mouse Pulldowns) interface - or get one with a CLUE (Command Line User Environment)? ###### From: "Raven" Newsgroups: rec.arts.books.tolkien References: <38FC6DF3.35E2B9AE@ist.uwaterloo.ca> <9R%K4.198$x3.2575@uchinews> <6u4s8zmak8.fsf@chonsp.franklin.ch> <8e9v7v$8pdl6$1@fu-berlin.de> <8eb8r4$8srv9$1@fu-berlin.de> <6uya5s8rhf.fsf@chonsp.franklin.ch> Subject: Re: Where's 'ch' (Re: Unfinished Tales) Lines: 18 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2314.1300 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.00.2314.1300 Message-ID: Date: Thu, 4 May 2000 23:59:24 +0200 NNTP-Posting-Host: 195.82.223.97 X-Complaints-To: abuse@get2.net X-Trace: news.get2net.dk 957478448 195.82.223.97 (Fri, 05 May 2000 00:14:08 MET DST) NNTP-Posting-Date: Fri, 05 May 2000 00:14:08 MET DST Organization: get2net Internet Kunde Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!newsfeed-zh.ip-plus.net!news.ip-plus.net!News.Amsterdam.UnisourceCS!skynet.be!news.algonet.se!algonet!newsfeed1.uni2.dk!news.get2net.dk!not-for-mail Xref: chonsp.franklin.ch rec.arts.books.tolkien:18456 Juho P. In Finnish hell is helvetti and the word helvetica looks a lot > like helvetti. I believe English 'hell', like Swedish and Norwegian 'helvete' and Danish 'helvede' (and German 'Hölle'?) come from the bleak hell of the old religion, Helheim, the land/home of the death-goddess Hel. Helvetica is a Roman name. Caesar's 'De Bello Gallico' makes a big point of Caesar defeating the Helvetii from between the Alps and the Juras. Corvus.
