This book, whose translations were the basis of best-selling works /The Hobbit/ and /The Lord of the Rings/, is a diary kept by the successive occupants of the residence Bag End, around the time of the War of the Ring, and covers roughly the years 2941 TA to 3020 TA. Due to the very restricted access, the work has become near-mythical, and some were sceptical it even existed. However, Christopher Tolkien, the literary executor of the Tolkien estate, said "I'm very happy we've now decided to come clean about this. Yes, the book does exist, and HOME was a fake, although based on early failed translations." One drawback is that the book is written in Westron, and all Tolkien's notes on that language are hidden in a filing cabinet of some evil people. they said only "Muhahaha, we will never share the secrets of these languages. You shall all perish!" For more information about the Red Book, including opening hours at the Museum, see -- Robert ###### From: jsavard@tenMAPSONeerf.edmonton.ab.ca (John Savard) Newsgroups: rec.arts.books.tolkien Subject: Re: Red Book Released Date: Wed, 05 Apr 2000 04:42:08 GMT Organization: Edmonton Community Network Lines: 18 Message-ID: <38eac3b4.3017814@news.ecn.ab.ca> References: <38e639fb@news.ecs.soton.ac.uk> NNTP-Posting-Host: freenet.edmonton.ab.ca X-Trace: newsfeed.sas.ab.ca 954910852 10896 198.161.206.2 (5 Apr 2000 05:00:52 GMT) X-Complaints-To: news@sas.ab.ca NNTP-Posting-Date: 5 Apr 2000 05:00:52 GMT X-Newsreader: Forte Free Agent 1.1/16.230 X-Original-NNTP-Posting-Host: 198.161.206.251 Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!newsfeed-zh.ip-plus.net!news.ip-plus.net!News.Amsterdam.UnisourceCS!skynet.be!cyclone.bc.net!rover.ucs.ualberta.ca!sas.ab.ca!ecn.ab.ca!198.161.206.251 Xref: chonsp.franklin.ch rec.arts.books.tolkien:16649 On 1 Apr 2000 19:03:39 GMT, Robert Brady wrote, in part: >FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE > >Oxford, England - > >Seventy years after its discovery in a library in Oxford by Professor >Tolkien, the Red Book of Westmarch has been released to Oxford University >Museum for digitisaton and preservation.
