Do you happen to know the proper conversion? I must admit that I've never taken the time to do it, and that I've simply had (extremely) minor celebrations on _our_ March 25 each year. I've justified this by the argument that Middle-earth was a fictional place, after all, and that direct translations are probably not entirely trustworthy anyway. :) Steuard Jensen ###### Reply-To: "Conrad Dunkerson" From: "Conrad Dunkerson" Newsgroups: rec.arts.books.tolkien References: <20000325220606.28025.00002181@ng-cu1.aol.com> <8bo5qh$1u0_018@news.uswest.net> Subject: Re: Happy New Year!! Well, the M-E calendar was based on 12 months. The years were of identical length, so the mapping could be considered on a day for day basis... once one figures out to do with the extra 'non- calendar' days on the M-E calendar. Fortunately JRRT answers the question for us; "The only points in which the differences between this and our calendar are important to the story at the crucial period, the end of 3018 and the beginning of 3019 (S.R. 1418, 1419), are these: October 1418 has only 30 days, January 1 is the second day of 1419, and February has 30 days; so that March 25, the date of the downfall of the Barad-dur, would correspond to our March 27, if our years began at the same seasonal point." RotK, Appendix D Personally I prefer to ignore the minor discrepancies caused by all months having 30 days and some days being 'uncounted' and just translate 'holidays' from one calendar to the other on the listed dates - it is every bit as accurate as the ways in which many of our traditional holidays were/are determined. ###### From: Mia Kalogjera Newsgroups: rec.arts.books.tolkien Subject: Re: Happy New Year!!
