Does anyone know of such a sheet for /the Silmarillion/? I know that in a couple of places in HoME, CJRT has alluded to things he now sees were wrong in his editing of /Sil/. Has anyone made a summary of them, so that we can all correct our copies? If not, would anyone like to undertake such a list as a public service? I'm no copyright lawyer, but I don't think there are any copyright problems as long as we merely list the corrections, e.g. Page 15 of HoME VII: on page 145 of Sil, in discussion of banners for houses of Noldor, change "Feanor" to "Finwe". Of course, we couldn't post passages of any significant length. Even if someone was uneasy about posting the actual corrections, surely there could be no objection to posting pointers to the corrections, e.g. HoME VIII page 15 HoME XII pages 143, 219 The above examples are all made up, by the way, so don't write in your copies of /Sil/! -- Stan Brown, Oak Road Systems, Cleveland, Ohio, USA http://www.mindspring.com/~brahms/ Encyclopedia of Arda: http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/default.htm Tolkien FAQs: http://home.uchicago.edu/~sbjensen/Tolkien/TolkNgFaq.html (Jensen) ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/pub/usenet/rec.arts.books.tolkien/ (Loos) more FAQs: http://www.mindspring.com/~brahms/faqget.htm ###### Reply-To: "Conrad Dunkerson" From: "Conrad Dunkerson" Newsgroups: rec.arts.books.tolkien References: Subject: Re: Errata sheet for /The Silmarillion/ Lines: 16 X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2919.6600 X-Mimeole: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.00.2919.6600 Message-ID: Date: Sun, 19 Mar 2000 13:21:12 GMT NNTP-Posting-Host: 12.78.74.23 X-Complaints-To: abuse@worldnet.att.net X-Trace: bgtnsc04-news.ops.worldnet.att.net 953472072 12.78.74.23 (Sun, 19 Mar 2000 13:21:12 GMT) NNTP-Posting-Date: Sun, 19 Mar 2000 13:21:12 GMT Organization: AT&T Worldnet Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news-ge.switch.ch!news.maxwell.syr.edu!europa.netcrusader.net!204.127.161.3!wn3feed!worldnet.att.net!wnmaster1!bgtnsc04-news.ops.worldnet.att.net.POSTED!not-for-mail Xref: chonsp.franklin.ch rec.arts.books.tolkien:15851 "Stan Brown" wrote in message news:MPG.133dce9588b9c7fd98ae0b@news.mindspring.com... > Does anyone know of such a sheet for /the Silmarillion/? That would be a very nice thing to have, but it would be a major undertaking to track down all the references scattered through HoME. We also don't always have the 'correct' answer, just an indication that the published was or may have been 'incorrect'. ###### From: "David L." Something else that would be helpful is an index or a concordance showing paragraph by paragraph where various elements in _The Silmarillion_ come from. I started this with "Of the Beginning of Days" which is a hodge podge of passages from various texts. The Ainulindale, the Annals of Aman, and the first chapter of the Later Quenta Silmarillion, "Of Valinor and the Two Trees", were all used by Christopher Tolkien to assemble the published text. It would be a great reference tool to find the source of the published book. Dave
