Here is a notion that has probably been beaten to death before, but it just popped into my central nervous system. Bilbo wrote THE HOBBIT, and Frodo, Samwise, Elanor et. al. wrote THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Tolkien maintained the Redbook as his source for LoTR (in the introduction or notes at the beginning). Bottom line: Frodo was a better or at least a "deeper" writer than Bilbo. Sam and family carried on. Is this worthy of Comments? Bilbo wrote THE HOBBIT, and Frodo, Samwise, > Elanor et. al. wrote THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Yes, it has been discussed before... to the extent of also noting that the first few chapters of LotR (pre Barrow Downs) have a much lighter and more 'Hobbit'-like feel to them. This fits nicely given that Bilbo wrote part of the early story based on what the hobbits told him when they reached Rivendell. Thus the fox remarking to itself on the oddity of hobbits in the woods goes right into the same 'whimsical Bilbo style' as the troll's talking purse. ###### From: orius@webtv.net (David Sulger) Newsgroups: rec.arts.books.tolkien Subject: Re: Bilbo and Frodo as Authors Date: Fri, 11 Feb 2000 01:37:04 -0500 (EST) Organization: WebTV Subscriber Lines: 10 Message-ID: <23441-38A3AE10-46@storefull-256.iap.bryant.webtv.net> References: <01bf91bc.e98b3733@usw-ex0106-048.remarq.com> NNTP-Posting-Host: localhost.webtv.net Mime-Version: 1.0 (WebTV) Content-Type: Text/Plain; Charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit X-WebTV-Signature: 1 ETAtAhQlEQCmeLwMsBHKH3erwrDjuZglBQIVAMTDpzPB/xFmH8LQL0+HbCXRdpPt Content-Disposition: Inline Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news-ge.switch.ch!newsfeed.berkeley.edu!newsfeed.stanford.edu!paloalto-snf1.gtei.net!news.gtei.net!webtv.net!not-for-mail Xref: chonsp.franklin.ch rec.arts.books.tolkien:14129 StevieRayVonnegut wrote: >Bottom line: Frodo was a better or at >least a "deeper" writer than Bilbo. Well, I suppose it would be difficult to do anything seriously when surrounded by those Rivendell elves partying at all hours of the day.... --Dave
