What that was supposed to be I will leave to others to guess. Or you to tell us. Actually whether your post will display or screw up is dependant on what computer, what newsreader (and possibly what font) the reciever has. As I have a system that uses ISO-8859-1 (Latin 1 = western Europe) I can read your stuff. Anyone with ISO-8859-non-1 or UTF-8 or Mac or Windows-1251 or ... will get their stuff screwed up. In the best case illegible, in the worst a crashed news reader. So you should really not do it. Interesting thing: I just pressed "send" and my newsreader complained: The article contains control characters. Really post? y or n. Well I am going to send it anyway. But it really is not kosher. -- Neil Franklin, neil@franklin.ch.remove http://neil.franklin.ch/ Nerd, Geek, Unix Wizzard and Guru, Hacker, Sysadmin, Roleplayer, Mystic Computer: toy that speeds work, so you have more time to play with it ###### From: brahms@mindspring.com (Stan Brown) Newsgroups: rec.arts.books.tolkien Subject: Re: Test. But posting tests to a regular newsgroup is not the best way, for two reasons: 1. It clutters up the newsgroup, which some of us have to pay to download. 2. It can give you a false sense of security: if _you_ see your article in news, it doesn't mean that the article ever left your site. Your local server may simply be presenting it to you without sending it to any other servers. Fortunately, there's a better way: post to misc.test. It solves problem 1 because no humans actually _read_ misc.test. And it solves problem 2 because a number of servers around the world will send you email acknowledgements when they see your article. (You may want to use a distinctive subject line so that you can easily recognize your article.) And if you want to know whether your server handles moderated newsgroups correctly, you can try posting to misc.test.moderated. If your server is working properly, you'll receive an acknowledgement in email. ###### From: brahms@mindspring.com (Stan Brown) Newsgroups: rec.arts.books.tolkien Subject: Re: Test. But posting tests to a I apologize on two counts for posting the above: first, I meant to mail it, and second, I didn't really mean even to mail it because I was confused about which test I was responding to. I've tried to cancel it, but cancels don't seem to work on Mindspring any more so I don't know whether the cancel propagates anywhere else. -- Stan Brown, Oak Road Systems, Cleveland, Ohio, USA http://www.mindspring.com/~brahms/ ###### From: Paul S.
