I'm looking for a copy of The Hobbit that apparently has "unbelievable illustrations" but I have no idea which illustrator it might be, and have not been able to locate many to compare. Does anyone know of any particularly great ones? I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks! eengel@uoguelph.ca ###### Message-ID: <38272CD2.24096D67@mediaone.net> From: Cian X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.7 [en]C-MOENE (Win95; U) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 Newsgroups: rec.arts.books.tolkien Subject: Re: Help! The fairly recent Alan Lee illustrated 'Hobbit' should be available through B&N or Amazon online. (Lee did LOTR's too!) Michael Hague did the Hobbit in the mid 80's if I recall correctly -- but as for availability of that one, I don't know I'm afraid. Cheers. -- Cian ###### Message-ID: <38273724.2633828B@mediaone.net> From: Cian X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.7 [en]C-MOENE (Win95; U) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 Newsgroups: rec.arts.books.tolkien Subject: Re: Help! It's tough to say which one is the 'unbelievable' edition you were apparently told about, as tastes vary. I like all three for their own merits. (am I forgetting any others?). Lee's work is ethereal, done in earth-tone watercolours. A very popular English artist, though I've noted some here think he is too 'ethereal' at times (he's working on the movie btw) Hague is a watercolourist as well, and his 'lighter' version fits the Hobbit well stylistically I think (although Gandalf's pointed hat is rather too long, and Hague's 'faces' have always looked a bit odd to me) Tolkien, although not a pro per say in the field, well, his illustrations definitely have a charm that's hard to describe, but his visual design skills should not be underated imo, and he is the 'creator' of course. Gotta have the Tolkien in any case! As it's new I'd guess someone was raving about the Alan Lee. Hope that helped a bit. -- Cian ###### From: colinr@toliman.uio.no (Colin Rosenthal) Newsgroups: rec.arts.books.tolkien Subject: Re: Help! Well I, for one, couldn't believe Hague's illustrations :-) As you say, tastes vary. -- Colin Rosenthal Astrophysics Institute University of Oslo
