Here they are. The Question. Do Balrogs have wings? Answers. Yes 15 No 8 That's it almost two to one in favor of wings. Of course that doesn't make it right. The poll result I saw at ringbearer.org had exactly the same proportion: 62% pro-Wing, 38% anti. Except of course, Ringbearer had 6,000 votes! When I saw that poll, I was terribly torn between riotous laughter and ripping my hair out in frustration. Laughter, because they phrased it as a Yes/No question, when there are _sooooo_ many more positions than that. Frustration, because such a simplistic treatment misses all chance of finding consensus, which (as I've pointed out many times before) isn't nearly as difficult as it may seem at first. It also suggests a fundamental lack of understanding of the subtlety of the debate. For the record, I think that the _best_ Balrog Wings poll I've seen was Michael's poll at Xenite.org. The results were: 49% Big, shadowy wings! 19% Well, maybe a shadow that sort of looks winglike. 23% Yes, big leathery wings! 8% No, no wings whatsoever! As I view the first two to be virtually the same choice (assuming "shadow" means "palpable darkness" or something to that effect), this poll comes out with 68% on "my" side of the debate. :) Interpreted as a yes/no question, its statistics are reasonably similar to those of the other yes/no polls, with 72% pro-wing and 27% anti-wing. Perhaps this explains why I don't like yes/no polls about Balrog wings: I end up on the losing side. :) Steuard Jensen ###### Message-ID: <3825B910.476A9812@indigo.ie> From: Michael O'Neill Organization: O'Neill Quigley & Associates X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.08 [en] (Win95; I) MIME-Version: 1.0 Newsgroups: rec.arts.books.tolkien Subject: Re: Balrog Wings Poll Results References: <19991105232003.01657.00001737@ng-bh1.aol.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Lines: 22 Date: Sun, 07 Nov 1999 17:38:24 +0000 NNTP-Posting-Host: 194.125.145.133 X-Complaints-To: news@indigo.ie X-Trace: news.indigo.ie 941996397 194.125.145.133 (Sun, 07 Nov 1999 17:39:57 GMT) NNTP-Posting-Date: Sun, 07 Nov 1999 17:39:57 GMT Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!newsfeed-zh.ip-plus.net!news.ip-plus.net!news.datacomm.ch!newscore.gigabell.net!unlisys!news.snafu.de!newspeer.ebone.net!diablo.theplanet.net!news.indigo.ie!not-for-mail Gordon Nash wrote: > > OK, no one has voted the last couple of days so I am assuming the votes are in. > Here they are. > > The Question.
