But I take this thread as an occasion to ask the NG some questions about a Quenya version of my name. There are two approaches to my name I thought about: 1. Based on the Latin meaning: ``Florianus'' means something like adorned with flowers IIRC. When I stumbled across the ``Now We Have All Got Elvish Names'' page, I found the entry Anthony, which goes in the same direction and suggests Lóto, Lótu or Lótion. 2. Christian tradition: As Florianus is the saint for protection against fire, something like ``master of fire'' could be working... I came up with ``Turnaron'' which sounds not too bad, but I'm wondering if it's a ``well-formed'' word? I'd prefer solution 2. What do you think? Thanks! Lóto and Lótu are not very likely names. Lótion is rather more probable. Probably the closest equivalent to the adjective florianus would be Lótea, but it wouldn't be used (by itself) as a proper name. > 2. Turnaron is rather odd; the usual (though not universal) order in Quenya compounds is Modifier(in stem form, not inflected form)+Main noun (often shortened). Here the modifier is nár(e) "fire" and the main noun is "master" (for which I think heru, -her would be better. I would recommend Náreher. Hi TitaNia. This site explains the general idea: http://www.uib.no/people/hnohf/elfnam.htm I think the thread started when someone posting as 'Earendil' gave this address, and then after reading the article, a few people checked the Tolkien groups for advice about the Quenya. A good site for this sort of exercise is; http://www.uib.no/People/hnohf/elfnam.htm In general you want to find out the 'meaning' or 'roots' of your name and then find elvish roots with the same meaning and put them together properly to form a name with the same meaning as your own. ###### From: jennf@tu-cottbus.de (Florian Jenn) Newsgroups: rec.arts.books.tolkien Subject: Re: Quenya Names Revisited Date: Mon, 8 Nov 1999 23:43:11 +0200 Organization: private site/BTU Cottbus Lines: 23 Message-ID: References: <52A747D556557CD7.3CF02BC2EC888F31.9B1B2881F63E6383@lp.airnews.net> NNTP-Posting-Host: ppp61.dialin.tu-cottbus.de Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Trace: Maust.bbone.tu-cottbus.de 942122653 8785 141.43.39.61 (9 Nov 1999 04:44:13 GMT) X-Complaints-To: usenet@Maust.bbone.tu-cottbus.de NNTP-Posting-Date: 9 Nov 1999 04:44:13 GMT X-Newsreader: slrn (0.9.5.2 UNIX) Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!newsfeed-zh.ip-plus.net!news.ip-plus.net!News.Amsterdam.UnisourceCS!golmote!isdnet!fu-berlin.de!news-ber1.dfn.de!news.tu-cottbus.de!jennf Hello!
