Am I correct that the section entitled "The Conclusion of the Quenta Silmarillion" found in HOME Vol. 5 is the latest Quenta Silmarillion (QS hereafter) writing on the topic? In other words, to make The Silmarillion that was published, CJRT took the later QS found in HOME Vol.X and added the Annals (Grey and Aman). However, all those later sources ended too early. So he went back to the pre LOTR QS for the "rest of the story", making the obvious changes to make it consistent with the later writings (for example Fionwe, son of Manwe > Eonwe, Maia, Herald of Manwe. Is this correct? If so, I'd like to follow up with a few questions. Thanks Russ ###### From: JP Subject: Re: Quenta Silmarillion Conclusion Newsgroups: rec.arts.books.tolkien Message-ID: <0c2df4d6.91acf7d8@usw-ex0102-016.remarq.com> Lines: 37 Bytes: 1352 X-Originating-Host: 171.66.101.84 Organization: http://www.remarq.com: The World's Usenet/Discussions Start Here References: <19990929210150.08286.00001589@ngol07.aol.com> X-Wren-Trace: eHlcdHVsK2EqM35wci13Y0t5fX1yezZ9eDtzfmUtMW4nMW8uOWg8JjsgKQ== Date: Wed, 29 Sep 1999 19:31:31 +1700 NNTP-Posting-Host: 10.0.2.16 X-Complaints-To: wrenabuse@remarq.com X-Trace: WReNphoon3 938658574 10.0.2.16 (Wed, 29 Sep 1999 19:29:34 PDT) NNTP-Posting-Date: Wed, 29 Sep 1999 19:29:34 PDT Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news-ge.switch.ch!isdnet!netnews.com!newsfeed.enteract.com!hermes.visi.com!news-out.visi.com!nntp2.giganews.com!remarQ73!supernews.com!remarQ.com!remarQ69!WReNclone!WReNphoon3.POSTED!WReN!not-for-mail In article <19990929210150.08286.00001589@ngol07.aol.com>, mcresq@aol.com (McREsq) wrote: > Wading through CJRT's notes and explanations has > proven entirely too tedious. > Am I correct that the section entitled "The Conclusion > of the Quenta > Silmarillion" found in HOME Vol. 5 is the latest > Quenta Silmarillion (QS > hereafter) writing on the topic? > In other words, to make The Silmarillion that was > published, CJRT took the > later QS found in HOME Vol.X and added the Annals > (Grey and Aman). I think so. Actually, the destruction of Doriath, the fall of Gondolin and the earliest part of the tale of Earendel seem to be still earlier. I think the last version of them is in the Quenta (Q) in HoME IV. In HoME IV C. Tolkien says "the Quenta account was the last that my father ever wrote of the story of Gondolin from Tuor's coming to its destruction;" Joćo Paulo * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet's Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet - Free! ###### Newsgroups: rec.arts.books.tolkien From: Michael@xenite.org (Michael Martinez) Subject: Re: Quenta Silmarillion Conclusion Organization: Xenite.Org: Worlds of Imagination on the Web Distribution: world Message-ID: <7svj2n$2is_022@Org.xenite.org> References: <19990929210150.08286.00001589@ngol07.aol.com> X-Newsreader: News Xpress 2.01 Lines: 18 Date: Thu, 30 Sep 1999 11:55:03 GMT NNTP-Posting-Host: 207.224.149.195 X-Trace: news.uswest.net 938692524 207.224.149.195 (Thu, 30 Sep 1999 06:55:24 CDT) NNTP-Posting-Date: Thu, 30 Sep 1999 06:55:24 CDT Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news-ge.switch.ch!news-fra1.dfn.de!news-kar1.dfn.de!newsfeed.nacamar.de!newsfeed.icl.net!newsfeed.icl.net!logbridge.uoregon.edu!news-out.uswest.net!news.uswest.net!Xenite In article <19990929210150.08286.00001589@ngol07.aol.com>, mcresq@aol.com (McREsq) wrote: >Wading through CJRT's notes and explanations has proven entirely too tedious. >Am I correct that the section entitled "The Conclusion of the Quenta >Silmarillion" found in HOME Vol. 5 is the latest Quenta Silmarillion (QS >hereafter) writing on the topic?
