Seeing that everyone here's in agreement that elves have one ear pointy, one ear not, I thought I'd comment on the similarities between Tolkein's Elves and Arthurian Fairies. Well those Fairies of Camelot were often over 6 feet high, lived for ever, could be killed, were nice to look at, and had regular ears. Elves in Tolkien were over 6 feet high, lived for ever, could be killed, were nice to look at, and had regular ears. (or pointy ones, Who knows, WHO CARES!) Any comments on the similarities between the Elves and the Fairies. (IF you ask me, Tolkien had those fairies in mind, and Thought that because botanical Fairies often are small and flight-ready, the name wouldn't make the least bit of sense!) The original meaning for fairy roughly translated from a Northern European language (Old English, Celtic, Gaelic, I forget which) was "fair folk" and typically used to describe a race of people who very closely resembled Tolkien's Elves. That's why Tolkien disliked Shakespeare's portrayal of fairies in his plays.
