Are these standard numbers for each particular device or do they vary from computer to computer? Read the file /usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt which lists the numbers and official names for all devices assigned by the kernal developers. If you are using the Debian distribution (and possibly also others) you may also want to look at the program makedev , it automatically generates /dev/* for all devices compiled into your kernal.
