I am using a serial cable instead of the Ribbon cable to connect to my board. Does this make a difference? it is only 1.8m long. (I presume you are still plugging into parallel port on CPU!). Does your board have the parallel cable header on it? If you are going to make the header, probably a good idea to put it as close to the chip as possible. The length of the cable shouldn't make much of a difference, as long as you don't set the JTAG clock too quickly (and cause packet collisions...). What board are you using? Is this by any chance the digilent board?
