They work well and are _much_ faster than the multilinx cable (programming an xcv_1802 takes about 20 seconds as opposed to several minutes with the multilinx). If you want a really simple way of doing it look at the apps note XAPP058. This was orginally intended for an embedded micro-controller but the s/w is easy to modify to drive a Win95/98 PC's parallel port. All you need then is a cable with a Centronics D25 at one end & 4 flying wires at the other although it is useful to buffer the JTAG on your board through an LS125. The associated s/w is called eisp_4.06 & is somewhere in the downloads directory. We've been using it off & on to allow users to update CPLDs on our board. Its still much slower than the parallel-III cable or at least the V2.0 was, maybe V4.06 has speeded up - we'll see next week. Its even possible to do an NT version. ###### Message-ID: <3A6A01A9.98627EB0@earthlink.net> From: Bill Lenihan Reply-To: lenihan3weNOSPAM@earthlink.net X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.7 [en] (Win98; I) X-Accept-Language: en,pdf MIME-Version: 1.0 Newsgroups: comp.arch.fpga Subject: Re: About programming cables References: <3A65F221.5A0EB904@media.mit.edu> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Lines: 27 Date: Sat, 20 Jan 2001 21:21:08 GMT NNTP-Posting-Host: 209.178.178.176 X-Complaints-To: abuse@earthlink.net X-Trace: newsread2.prod.itd.earthlink.net 980025668 209.178.178.176 (Sat, 20 Jan 2001 13:21:08 PST) NNTP-Posting-Date: Sat, 20 Jan 2001 13:21:08 PST Organization: EarthLink Inc. -- http://www.EarthLink.net Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news.ifi.unizh.ch!news.imp.ch!news-spur1.maxwell.syr.edu!news.maxwell.syr.edu!feed2.onemain.com!feed1.onemain.com!newsfeed2.earthlink.net!newsfeed.earthlink.net!newsmaster1.prod.itd.earthlink.net!newsread2.prod.itd.earthlink.net.POSTED!not-for-mail Xref: chonsp.franklin.ch comp.arch.fpga:4029 We have/had a MultiLinx cable for JTAG programming Virtex FPGAs, and it worked well for a while, but (a) was surprisingly slow, (b) appears to have died (though we don't know of any electrical overstress that our target h/w could have applied to it), and (c) is expensive. In retrospect, I like the JTAG Parallel Cable III Model DLC5 much better. We just got another one, and it only costs $95. "Juan M.
