This is an important part of hacker history which is fading. ITS is a huge part of computer culture that had so many of the foundations of what we use today. I got really interested in it when I began looking at pre-UNIX computer history. Everything led back to the creativity of ITS. I thought there had to be an ITS system I could play with, but I haven't had any luck. I'd like to put together a PDP emulator, the ITS operating system, and some classic, influential software like MacLisp, TECO, ADVENT, etc. I want to create a bootable emulator which is packaged so it can be started with an "its" command, so hackers who want to experience that culture and history don't have to become PDP emulation gurus. My problem is I'm at a woeful disadvantage because I've never seen a PDP before, let alone used one or know anything about emulators. I'm looking for people with expertise in emulators, and who have ITS software, who might want to help. You'd really be helping to preserve a part of computing which needs to be preserved. I have found PDP emulators, and one site that was supposed to have ITS tape images, but I can't piece it all together -- there's just not enough documentation. What I am running into more than anything is being ignorant of how all this stuff fits together. There are no how-to instructions. What I want to do is take the informal knowledge anyone has who's gotten ITS to work and package it in some way so other people don't have to go through the learning curve. I've started a web page, http://cyberreviews.skwc.com/cr_its.html, which is just a plea for help right now, but which will contain the whole system once it's working. Please e-mail me if you can help! Scott McMahan ###### From: Bob Supnik Newsgroups: alt.sys.pdp10 Subject: Re: New ... It just needs debugging. The principal problem, right now, is the lack of a working ITS disk or tape image. If you have a solution to that problem, debugging the existing simulators will be straightforward (although not easy). /Bob On Thu, 21 Jun 2001 11:56:18 GMT, "HouseOfNo" wrote: >I'm very interested in creating an ITS emulation that will run under >GNU/Linux. Useless without the rest of the system. Alan Bawden's FTP directory (ftp://ftp.ai.mit.edu/people/alan/its/) contains the source for Teco, and the Teco for Emacs as well as the ITS source and documentation, some of which makes poignant reading. Still no sign of either a Midas assembler or Maclisp or Macsyma, but I'm sure something is out there somewhere. The Midas assembler is the most important -- without that, nothing else will work. I had no direct contact with ITS at the time it was still being used, but I *have* used Genera, its immediate successor which bears more than a passing similarity to ITS. There are four things that can be done at this point: leave ITS in cryogenics, base an entirely new operating system on it (like Genera), try to bring it back as a museum curio by getting it to run on a PDP-10 emulator, or bringing it back as a living operating system by porting it to C (in which case there's some catching up to do). -- Le Hibou "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. The United States Government by law cannot copyright anything, so you don't have to worry about them. They can hold a copyright if someone else transfers it to them, but that would only have happened if MIT or the people who wrote it did that. ###### Message-ID: <3B33CCC0.BC257B8A@transmeta.com> From: "William H. Um, Genera was the Symbolics version of the MIT Lisp Machine software. It might have had some ITS-inspired features but really was totally different from ITS. ###### From: Rich Alderson Newsgroups: alt.sys.pdp10 Subject: Re: New ... The Midas assembler is the most important -- without that, > nothing else will work. I have a working MIDAS available to me (obviously), as well as the sources to a 1981 version (429). I think I can lay hands on a later version, as well. So the issue is to create an ITS executable rather than a Tops-20 executable. -- Rich Alderson Last LOTS Tops-20 Systems Programmer, 1984-1991 Current maintainer, MIT TECO EMACS (v. 170) last name @ XKL dot COM Chief systems administrator, XKL LLC ###### From: Daniel Seagraves Newsgroups: alt.sys.pdp10 Subject: Re: New ... It is pure code, so you could install it system-wide if you wanted. To make an ITS SBLK executable, put .SBLK at the top of the source file. The ITS is in if you want to compile it, but make a private copy so you don't break mine.
