My 18-bit DEC processor in an FPGA is working well enough to run the panel and boot ROM, run some interrupt-driven tests of the teletype interface and the IDE disk interface, and run a basic interpreter which I cobbled together just for fun. Keeping with my tradition of building the simplest member of a family, it's essentially a PDP-4, although it does implement extended memory (the manual of the PDP-4 talks about 32K systems, but nobody actually believes the memory extension control was designed or built) in the style of the PDP-7. Bob Supnik and friends have located a DECtape image of the advanced system software for the PDP-9 and PDP-15, and it seems like it should be possible to get this to work on my machine (although I think I will need to add the DBR instruction). But building a version of this with a new system device seems to be even harder than doing the same for OS/8, and it would be a *lot* easier if I had sources, in particular, for KMON and the DTA (or DKA) drivers. Were the sources ever released? And so any of the (small number) of PDP-9/PDP-15 collectors have them in their paper tape and/or listings collections? dgc ###### From: aek@spies.com (Al Kossow) Newsgroups: alt.sys.pdp10,alt.sys.pdp8 Subject: Re: a somewhat off-topic question Date: 14 Jun 2001 07:37:02 -0700 Organization: Spies In The Wire Lines: 40 Message-ID: <9gai6e$9mt$1@spies.com> References: NNTP-Posting-Host: spies.com X-Trace: 14 Jun 2001 07:57:49 -0700, spies.com Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news-ge.switch.ch!newsfeed00.sul.t-online.de!t-online.de!news-spur1.maxwell.syr.edu!news.maxwell.syr.edu!newsfeed.mathworks.com!enews.sgi.com!news.spies.com!localhost!not-for-mail Xref: chonsp.franklin.ch alt.sys.pdp10:5435 > > Bob Supnik and friends have located a DECtape > image of the advanced system software for the PDP-9 and PDP-15, and > it seems like it should be possible to get this to work > on my machine (although I think I will need to add the DBR instruction). > But building a version of this with a new system device > seems to be even harder than doing the same for OS/8, and it would > be a *lot* easier if I had sources, in particular, for > KMON and the DTA (or DKA) drivers. > > Were the sources ever released? There are even fewer 18 bit folks out there than people interested in 36 bit machines. I ran across this recently on the web 1969 Computer Census -------------------- Digital Equipment Corp. PDP-1 54 PDP-4 28 PDP-5 93 PDP-6 19 PDP-7 86 PDP-8 Series 3,834 PDP-9 Series 342 PDP-10 Series 91 LINC-8 148 PDP-12 12 I keep trying to chase down leads to find 7/9/15 software but there just wasn't much out there to start with :-<
