My understanding is that SM10 was an early internal name for the KS10 project, and as usual they didn't quite finish doing $$ on everything before it went out the door. Could be wrong. As for making mistakes, there was a very good reason to keep a FOO.ORG and remember that TECO always had enough sense to rename the original file to a FOO.BAK by default with a TECO monitor command :-). Without the ; it would error, and not do anything past the end of the iteration. I was always afraid to exit without checking on it.
