Where do folks who have tape drives get good head cleaning supplies? Automotive supply stores and pharmacies both carry isopropyl achohol but both contain other "additives". Also what do folks use to clean the heads with? I recall (in the old days) using special swabs that wouldn't shed lint. In the old days we used these pre-wetted wipes (they came in little foil packets like wash-and-dry's) from a tape supply vendor. But I'd think it should be fine to use the foam swabs and cleaning solution sold for VCR's. ###### Message-ID: <3A33DCBD.78C2336B@bartek.net> From: Arthur Krewat X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.7 [en] (X11; I; SunOS 5.8 i86pc) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 Newsgroups: alt.sys.pdp10 Subject: Re: cleaning magtapes References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Lines: 17 Date: Sun, 10 Dec 2000 19:47:56 GMT NNTP-Posting-Host: 24.190.213.53 X-Trace: news02.optonline.net 976477676 24.190.213.53 (Sun, 10 Dec 2000 14:47:56 EST) NNTP-Posting-Date: Sun, 10 Dec 2000 14:47:56 EST Organization: Optimum Online Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news.nextra.ch!news1.sunrise.ch!news.imp.ch!news-spur1.maxwell.syr.edu!news.maxwell.syr.edu!howland.erols.net!cyclone2.usenetserver.com!news-out.usenetserver.com!news01.optonline.net!news02.optonline.net.POSTED!not-for-mail Xref: chonsp.franklin.ch alt.sys.pdp10:1647 Greg Satz wrote: > > Now that I have a tape drive, I have the requirement of head cleaning > (quite often). I've used Texwipes forever on 9-track drives, and have never had any problems with them. They are the cotton/polyester wipes, that used to have isopropyl alcohol in them. I just looked at http://www.texwipe.com and found that they (apparently) don't have alcohol in them anymore. They also have the foam-tipped swabs you mentioned. art k. ###### From: David Razler Newsgroups: alt.sys.pdp10 Subject: Re: cleaning magtapes Reply-To: david.razler@worldnet.att.net Message-ID: References: X-Newsreader: Forte Agent 1.8/32.548 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Lines: 27 Date: Mon, 11 Dec 2000 16:19:56 GMT NNTP-Posting-Host: 12.79.64.30 X-Complaints-To: abuse@worldnet.att.net X-Trace: bgtnsc04-news.ops.worldnet.att.net 976551596 12.79.64.30 (Mon, 11 Dec 2000 16:19:56 GMT) NNTP-Posting-Date: Mon, 11 Dec 2000 16:19:56 GMT Organization: AT&T Worldnet Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news.nextra.ch!news1.sunrise.ch!news.imp.ch!news-spur1.maxwell.syr.edu!news.maxwell.syr.edu!wn4feed!worldnet.att.net!135.173.83.19!wnmasters2!bgtnsc04-news.ops.worldnet.att.net.POSTED!not-for-mail Xref: chonsp.franklin.ch alt.sys.pdp10:1774 On Sun, 10 Dec 2000 12:16:25 -0700, Greg Satz wrote: >Now that I have a tape drive, I have the requirement of head cleaning >(quite often). Nothing else is added, since you cannot drink the stuff. VCR head cleaner is isopropynol with something else my nose just quite can't catch. The alcohol with the problem chemicals is denatured ethyl alcohol, which tends to eat tape heads. RatSh** sells lintless plastic swabs. dmr ###### Sender: prep@k9.prep.synonet.com Newsgroups: alt.sys.pdp10 Subject: Re: cleaning magtapes References: From: Paul Repacholi Date: 12 Dec 2000 01:43:37 +0800 Message-ID: <87g0ju97li.fsf@k9.prep.synonet.com> Lines: 17 X-Newsreader: Gnus v5.7/Emacs 20.7 NNTP-Posting-Host: 072.d03.pe.iqnet.net.au X-Trace: 12 Dec 2000 02:42:29 +0800, 072.d03.pe.iqnet.net.au Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news.nextra.ch!news1.sunrise.ch!news.imp.ch!news-spur1.maxwell.syr.edu!news.maxwell.syr.edu!news.mel.connect.com.au!news.per.connect.com.au!newsfeed.iinet.net.au!news.waia.asn.au!usenet.per.paradox.net.au!127.0.0.1!nobody Xref: chonsp.franklin.ch alt.sys.pdp10:1740 Greg Satz writes: > Now that I have a tape drive, I have the requirement of head cleaning > (quite often). Just like: methyl alcohol == methanol ethyl alcohol == "alcohol" (booze) == ethanol isopropyl alcohol == isopropanol glycerine == glycerol etc. The "-ol" form is used by chemists, mostly. -Rob ----- Rob Warnock, 31-2-510 rpw3@sgi.com Network Engineering http://reality.sgi.com/rpw3/ Silicon Graphics, Inc.
