He was absolutely charming, and they were very happy for their friend. At the end of the evening they asked him why such a nice guy was still single at 40. He told them that until a few months ago, he had been a nasty, vicious, drug taking drunkard and a bastard to all women. He was also a professional scuba diver. Then he had done a dive off the Great Barrier Reef (trying to discover why the Crown of Thorns starfish which were threatening to destroy the entire reef had suddenly stopped eating coral - that's another story.) Anyway, he was such a braggart and sure of himself that he dived very deep, so it would take over 20 minutes to reach surface without dying of the bends, to a boat with no decompression chamber. He went alone - also forbidden. He did not use a rope to connect him to the boat. He only took a single air cylinder, also a stupid move. Whilst sitting on the bottom of the ocean (yes, there are deep bits off the edge of the GBR) the valve jammed on his air cylinder. As he sat there, waiting to die, he reviewed his life. He decided that he had made a real mess of it, and was very sorry. He really wished that he could have another go, and could remedy all his errors. Then he felt someone tap him sharply on the shoulder. He turned and saw a scuba twin air cylinder ying not far away on the floor of the ocean. Scrabbling over to it, he found that it was full of air! When he finally made it back to the boat (carrying all cylinders) he told the crew what had happened. They were especially amazed because six months previously they had lost two twin cylinders over the side of the boat in a storm. They had dived for weeks and only found one, as they are very expensive items. But they had found the other one where they knew they had lost it, about 20 miles away from there. Previously he had been a self-declared sceptic, but now he is learning all about 'woo-wooism', the new Millennial religion of the masses! Anyway, he is a really nice guy now, deeply in love with a wonderful woman, and living every moment in bliss. Long may it continue!
