To throw the anti-spam filters off track. Originally Usenet spammers simply massively crossposted. So programs were written to kill massive crossposts. So then they sent out multiple messages with max 5 newsgroups. So programs were written to detect multiple identical posts to different groups. So they added them silly "2 blank 4 digit" numbers to the Subject: lines. So programs were written to kill posts with them it they were otherwise the same. So they added such crap lines to foil that. So programs were written to kill such posts. And so on.
