Not so long ago I remember a surreal conversation with a work colleague who hadn't heard that one of the women who, as a child, had made some celebrated photographs of fairies, had finally confessed. The case had been quite celebrated at the time because Conan Doyle, then well into his dotty spiritualist phase, had pronounced the photographs genuine. This colleague of mine was quite dismayed, and insisted (contrary to my expectation from seeing the photographs) that there was nothing oddly _painted on_ about the appearance of the fairies, which really had all the appearance of the most preposterous Rackham-influenced fakes. :) -- Email handle is time-encoded to foil spammers. A friend and I went to see that movie about those two girls when it came out a couple years ago 'cause another friend said she'd really like it. Twenty minutes into the movie, she pokes me in the ribs and says, "My god, that little girl was my great aunt!" The pictures were definitely faked, though family lore insists that the girls really had the "gift". (It must run in the family, then, as my friend was involved in the early RV experiments at SRI and did pretty well, I understand...) :-)
