She has gotten back home for summer vacation and has to share the computer with her family so she doesn't get much time to use it and does not have access to the newsgroup. She said to tell you all she'd be back online as soon as humanly possible. BTW, I've been rather bogged down with work myself here recently and that is why I haven't been posting alot. (This is a particularly bad time to not check the group often as well, nothing like 50 posts all saying "snuh". I take that back - the 3dfx newsgroup I sometimes peruse has a lot of garbage too, in terms of profanity and crudity. However, if I used filters there I would probably miss a lot of posts that contain useful information, too. :) I just scan the subject headers for the ones that look the most likely to be on-topic and take my chances. ###### From: Craig Shillington Newsgroups: alt.out-of-body Subject: Re: Hello from Stacey-Lynn! I do the same Lorz. Just add the name of the sender to the filter and mark it as read. Probably a longer process, but I feel I have more control over what posts I see then, only those posts with the filter name in the 'from' field get filtered for me. I simply keep adding the more I come across. I still see the headers and the subject, just can't read any messages. That's fine by me, they get marked as read and I skip right over them. :) Would hate to miss anything other than what I wanted filtered. AV Programs work by scanning a file and comparing it with an "hit list" of fingerprints of known viruses. Unfortunately every new virus is per definition unknown to the hit list compilers. So AV Programs can only help weed out viruses that are old enough to be known and analyzed and added to the list. Every new one goes straight through, and *BANG*. See Melissa, see Bubbleboy, see Iloveyou... The only safe way is to never open attachments. Just - trying to stop OE from doing that automatically seems to be an exercise in futility. Even getting it to just display full filenames (so you can see if they end in .vbs/.doc/etc) requires an option set, then some are still not there, so go registry hacking, some more appear, but some are not, ... I don't use it. I don't even have it on my older PC, and although I have it on the new one I've never even tried it. I just use Netscape Communicator for email. Yeah, it's definetely getting out of hand. BTW I downloaded Netscape 4.73 and still not support for anything else but Inbox in the message filter. Maybe it is only the UNIX version lacking the killfile. I checked Mozilla and couldn't even find the newsreader! It would be found under Edit->Message Filters, correct? Unfortunately, at least two of the twits are going hog wild and modifying their headers after every few posts, making it rather difficult to killfile them. I thought maybe one drastic but rather effective way to eliminate one would be to kill everything with bellsouth.net in the path (it's pretty sad when a few idiots have managed to taint the reputation of an entire ISP, isn't it?), but it seems that would also eradicate everything lorz@bellsouth.net would post. Darn. I think we're just going to have to settle for a feeling of bemusement while reflecting on the fact that these bozos are rather frantically tweaking their headers to evade our killfiles, all to generate heaps of pointless posts that we'll ignore anyway. Oh, it's not your fault -- I was just looking for patterns that they couldn't mangle that I could filter on. It's no big deal. It just means that instead of having the software automatically trash these guys, I read what interests me and exit the group, marking everything else as read just like you do. > > > : I think we're just going to have to settle for a feeling of > : bemusement while reflecting on the fact that these bozos are rather > : frantically tweaking their headers to evade our killfiles, all to > : generate heaps of pointless posts that we'll ignore anyway. I have just looked at the 4.72 for Linux I have here (I only use it to surf, I use Gnus for news). Edit->MessageFilters gives a list of existing filters, as I have none it only shows Inbox. New... brings the filter edit box, there the [Inbox |v] thingie gives me all my mail folders, but no news groups (despite me having the Message reader open in news before going Edit->Filters). This seems to be an pure mail filter. I > It would be found under Edit->Message Filters, correct? Yes. > All I get there > is Inbox as a choice. Well I get all mail folders, but no newsgroups. As you are running Linux I see 2 possibilities: a) use an different news reader b) set up an local news server (such as leafnode [1]) and have the download part of that do the killfiling [1] you do not need to go over board as I do and run inn for this. -- Neil Franklin, neil@franklin.ch.remove http://neil.franklin.ch/ Nerd, Geek, Hacker, Unix Guru, Sysadmin, Roleplayer, LARPer, Mystic Use a WIMP (Windows Icons Mouse Pulldowns) interface - or get one with a CLUE (Command Line User Environment)? ###### Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!not-for-mail From: Neil Franklin Newsgroups: alt.out-of-body Subject: Re: Hello from Stacey-Lynn! A better alternative for those of us with good newsreaders is to flag the header info from *desirable* contributors to the newsgroup. I've got a newsreader that allows scoring and color labeling of posts using regexps, rather than just killing them -- it makes it very easy to sort and recognize at a glance people with whom you are familiar, and can trust their posts to be at least somewhat interesting. It also has the added bonus of simplifying the detection of frogery...when Sherilyn was being frogged, it was rather obvious to me because here were all these posts by a "Sherilyn" that didn't have the usual light blue background color. > > > > (it's pretty sad when a few idiots have > > managed to taint the reputation of an entire ISP, isn't it?), > > Well the ISPs reputation would only be tarnished of they supported > them. There are no grounds for complaints -- just changing your posting name is not a violation of the TOS for any ISP that I know of. Flooding bellsouth with spurious complaints is more likely to get *you* on their bad list than to cause any change in her behavior. Although it is an interesting situation...the usual prescription newsadmins make for managing trolls is to killfile them and ignore them. They don't usually have to deal with obsessed kooks who purposefully change their headers ten times a day or more to get around killfiles, though. > > > > but it > > seems that would also eradicate everything lorz@bellsouth.net would > > post. Davis's slrn package, to pull down a small filtered spool. It has a fairly powerful killfile facility. Another possibility to investigate is using a small proxy news server-- like the nfilter (which is unfortunately windows only). But the best thing to do is just to download slrn and slrnpull and use them together. It's much better than Netscape. [...] -- Email handle is time-encoded to foil spammers. Use recent handles only.
