I know the feeling! How long ago did you "write over" that info on your hard drive??? If it wasn't toooo long, then all that info is still there! It's just being written over! When you "erase" something from your hard-drive....it simply deletes the "address" for that info, and writes over it, as needed. Someone who knows what they're doing, can still go in and retrieve most of your documents from the drive. Depends, too, on the size of your drive. Check it out. B.D. Here a few lessons to avoid repeats: > start looking through some of my zip disks. Hmmm where is that one I kept > all my journals on? Hmmmm. Oh yea, I needed that one disk for > work. One _never_ever_ needs a disk strongly enough to erase an backup copy. That is the path to the hell of data loss. Being a cheapscate and reusing disks (or tapes). Systematically write stuff to backup and when that is full break out permanently the "write enable" tab. That is actually one of the best features of CD-Rs. They fundamentally can not be reused, so no one does this stupid thing. > certainly put the contents on my hard drive before cleaning that disks. > Yes, I did that. Then of cource I put that stuff back on a zip before I > deleted the file from my HD. Why delete it? I still have every surviving file (230MByte) I have ever produced online - permanently. And of course I have backups of everything: - at least one, for everythiong, even _every_ news post I have ever downloaded, yes _all_ of a.oob for over 2 years on hard disk _and_backup_, same also all cached web pages - usually 2 backups, for all personally generated data - in some cases 3, my website, the 3rd copy is the disk of the provider - actually 4, for them, the providers machine is backuped dayly to tape - I once had 5 times backup for often used stuff when I had a notebook What is still missing is off site backups (safe against fire), allthough the Website fits that for its data. If it wasn't a publically accessible machine with 600 user accounts on it I would copy all my personal mails to it as well. P.S. I work as system administrator, so I have seen too many people lose data. I have no intention to do it myself. > Yep I did that...ahhh wait!! oh geezzz!!! > Where is it! That can also happen with paper. Where is it gone to? A question that can be easily solved by having an definite policy of where to put things, and how to write on then what is in them (filenames and disk labels). > Oh man they are all gone. All of them hundreds of oobes... painstakenly > detailed in description and method. Oh man all gone. Outch! > Ink and paper folks... Ink and paper! A bad solution: paper decayes, it gets screwed up, it fades, it is slow to write, messy to edit, it is a lot of work and expense to backup (photocopy every page anyone?), it (and the backups) take lots of room, it can get lost in a fire. Computer files, when treated with the proper precaucions (= backups), are actually far safer to store data. Oh, don't forget to store the data in standard formats like ASCII. Do not use things like MS Word .DOC files. They may be unreadable in 2 years due to yet annother file format change. -- Neil Franklin, neil@franklin.ch.remove http://neil.franklin.ch/ Nerd, Geek, Unix Wizzard and Guru, Hacker, Sysadmin, Roleplayer, Mystic Computer: toy that speeds work, so you have more time to play with it ###### From: "Sue Allen" Newsgroups: alt.out-of-body References: <479j4.402$lY6.100561@homer.alpha.net> Subject: Re: Ink and paper Lines: 53 X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2314.1300 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.00.2314.1300 Message-ID: Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2000 18:24:15 -0800 NNTP-Posting-Host: 209.83.107.66 X-Complaints-To: abuse@alpha.net X-Trace: homer.alpha.net 948846104 209.83.107.66 (Tue, 25 Jan 2000 18:21:44 CST) NNTP-Posting-Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2000 18:21:44 CST Path: chonsp.franklin.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news-ge.switch.ch!news-fra1.dfn.de!news0.de.colt.net!colt.net!news.maxwell.syr.edu!hermes.visi.com!news-out.visi.com!newspump.sol.net!news.execpc.com!newspeer.sol.net!homer.alpha.net!not-for-mail Xref: chonsp.franklin.ch alt.out-of-body:31186 Oooh cool!
