I *thought* that I could simply type the same subject heading into the "new post" window, but I've found that this tactic simply starts a *new* thread with the same subject heading. It goes to the NG, but because it won't thread into the rest of the posts on that subject, most people won't notice it or won't open it, thinking they've already seen it. I *could* tack it on to someone else's reply - and I've done that - but it seems potentially confusing, especially when the post that is used is several times removed from the one I would like to answer, or is in a different thread altogether. I've also tried posting directly from dejanews, but that didn't work either. (I'm assuming that I must pick up a deja account, something I'm reluctant to do.) Direct email to the author seems intrusive. So. Can anybody help me figure this out? I'm hoping there's a simple solution, but after a few days of trying off and on, I have to admit I'm stumped. Yes. because your post is a new thread, i.e produced by 'New' and not by 'Reply'. > I *could* tack it on to > someone else's reply - and I've done that - but it seems potentially > confusing, It is for some people. Particularly those that sort by thread (I sort by alphabet and date, so it does not matter to me). > I've also tried posting directly from dejanews, but that didn't work either. > (I'm assuming that I must pick up a deja account, something I'm reluctant to > do.) Understandable. > Direct email to the author seems intrusive. Some see it so. Far worse is though, that your post is then not part of the public discussion. > So. Can anybody help me figure this out? Yes. The trick lies in 2 header lines that are in every post. Of you look precisely [1] at your post you will see among the header lines this one: Message-ID: <38822df5_1@nntp-out.newsnerds.com> If you now look [1] at my reply you will see another Message-ID: (I can not enter it here, as it will only be generated, when I send this post off). You will though also see: References: <38822df5_1@nntp-out.newsnerds.com> That is the crucial line that says that my post shall be inserted into the thread yours started, and that it is directly 1 level below yours. Any followup to my post (if someone writes one) will have yet annother Message-ID: and an References: with both your post and my posts Message-ID:s in it, thus declaring itsself to be an 2nd level reply, underneath my first level. [1] for both of these you will have to set your newsreader to "Display all Headers", not the standard "Display important/standard headers". > I'm hoping there's a simple > solution, It is technically simple. But I suspect that Outlook Express will not give you the ability to add header lines (that is the price of using GUI style programs that display form-like windows). For that you will need an real news program that gives you the header as part of the editor (the GNUS I have here allows it). Note that simply putting in an References: line as first of your text will put it after the empty line that separates header and message. So all of our newsreaders will simply ignore it (thats what the empty line is for). -- Neil Franklin, neil@franklin.ch.remove http://neil.franklin.ch/ Nerd, Geek, Unix Wizzard and Guru, Hacker, Mystic Computer: toy that speeds work, so you have more time to play with it
