i was about to have an OBE last night but i was on my side and got stuck while
trying to get out by sliding out of my backside. then i felt intense
heat/burning and a headache and i also couldn't breath so i returned to my
body. but the experience was wholly disturbing and i couldn't get anything
done today. does anyone know why all of my recent OBEs have resulted in pain?

The common cop-out for such an experience is "Chakra blockage". Well, maybe
it's not a "cop-out" - there might be something to that phrase that I don't
know about.
I had a number of painful "exits" over the years. I have to admit that I do
accept that there are locations along the spine that correspond to the
"Chakras" mentioned in many writings. I'm just not exceptionally familiar
with all that is written about them. But, I do know, from personal
experience, that there can be some mild pain in various parts of the "body"
while making the shift - or shortly after. If you were to do a dejanews
search on me for posts about three years ago, you might find that I made a
number of posts with questions similar to yours. ie, severe abdominal
cramps - so intense that I could not continue the journey - but once I
returned to the physical, there was absolutely no evidence of such physical
cramps taking place. I no longer experience such pain.
My suggestion is that you just continue with your efforts, but try to move
your attention more toward the center or top of your head.
Bring your flow from your legs into the base of your spine, up your spine,
and out through the top of your head with a repetative mantra for about 5
minutes. This may help relieve some of the tensions as well as help you
move your center of consciousness away from the physical. Don't attempt the
shift until you are completely centered on your inner vision. Don't force
your vision - just relax and watch in a detached manner.
I would never have believed this was possible if I didn't do it myself - you
can actually direct the vibrations of a mantra to specific parts of the body
just by noticing them in that area and focusing lightly. Any part of your
body can be found to vibrate as you hum and focus your attention on that
body part. Give it a try! Direct this energy, slowly, up your spine -
until you can feel the complete flow from bottom to top and out - this will
help clear the path through your 'so-called' Chakras.
In massaging your nervous system this way, the pain will eventually go away.
If you have physical pain, you can do the same thing. Really... you can
make a specific part of your body vibrate to help alleviate the pain just by
focusing on it while humming.

Hmmm, I dont know about the pain you experienced, but I had my first OOBE on
the 4th of this month, and like you, I was laying on my side .
But I didnt leave through my back...I started to leave from my side, floating
upwards...however, I was only able to get my upper body out. I seemed to be
stuck from the waist down, so I soon returned to the body. But I was so
exhilirated that I didnt feel any pain, headaches, or any other kind of OOBE
side effect.

In my experience the only real physical discomfort during OOBEs has been due
to some other thing. . . not the OOBE. I know I have trouble on my right
side whether I go OOB or not. Example, if I have eaten something that for
some reason causes me problems I will feel that if I am on my right side,
but not on my back or other positions. I sometimes get headaches in the
night when I sleep on my right side. It is due to the position for me.
Did you feel that way before? Is it normally a comfortable position for
you?

Bart,
That's an excellent idea! Right now I just tried to hum and focus the
vibration of the mantra on certain parts of my body and it works....AND I AM
NOT EVEN MEDITATING! I did it sitting here in front of my computer! So if it
works that well while fully awake, I cant wait to implement this into my OOBE
techniques! Thanks!

Hey great! Hope it helps. Mantras are interesting things. I didn't use to
give them much credit - but now I know they can definately have an effect on
the nervous system. I don't know why I didn't give them much credit. Guess
I'm just a slow learner. After all, I knew all along that music can affect
the body and mind. Singing is a definate alignment and release. A mantra,
if done properly, is a very effective tool.
>"There's nothing to fear except fear itself...Oh...plus rejection and

Not to mention tax time, registered mail from attorney's, employee reviews,
loud knocks at the door when you know nobody in the area, flashing blue
lights in you rear view mirror, "Error" messages popping up in what use to
be a perfectly good working program, thousands of tiny flying bugs crawling
out from under your wooden steps, an empty fuel gauge in Harlem...
Who are these idiot philosophers, anyway?

Well, I never gave it much credit either. I think I never paid attention to it
because I have always laughed at those monks you would see, sitting indian
style, humming to themselves! I think the majority of the western civilazation
does that as well. It just seemed to "out there" for me to do! Never did I
imagine that I would consider doing the same thing! And at this point, since
my OOBE, there isnt a whole lot that I would label in the "out there" category,
although I still don't have any intention on getting mixed up with any drugs or
magic.
I have seemed to reach a point this last week where I seemed to making a
lot of progress...but now when I lay down to try and meditate, I am having
trouble. I am either really tired and/or I feel too mentally drained to
attempt to OOBE. I guess I am we all have spiritual cycles which have high and
low success periods. But I am determined to keep going foward
until I have another OOBE. You go girl! =)
