I just kind of threw this together from what I remember...so let me know if I made any mistakes. :-) Matt Holmes Mind Travel Plus http://www.execpc.com/~mholmes/ "Alt.out-of-body" was formed way back in September 1992. This wasn't the first OBE related newsgroup however. It was actually formed shortly after "alt.oobe" (July, 1992) because the name "alt.oobe" was not very descriptive to those who don't know about OBEs. During this time, "alt.out-of-body" was linked to a mailing list, "listserv@gnosys.svle.ma.us." Postings could be made by sending e-mail to "alt.out-of-body@gnosys.svle.ma.us." This however was discontinued. I can't remember exactly when; sometime in early/mid 1995 I think. In 1994, there was quite alot of activity surounding the phenomena. "The Astral Projection/OOBE Course" was written in early 1994 by Don DeGracia on CompuServe. During mid-1994, Robert Bruce released his "Treatise on Astral Projection." And finally at the end of the year, Jouni Smed wrote the "alt.out-of-body FAQ." These documents were all stored on the Minpro FTP Site. The FAQ was also frequently posted to the newsgroup until early 1996. You can find it though DejaNews if you wish to read the original text. The FAQ was also available in HTML at Jouni Smed's Web Site, "Altered States of Consciousness" (http://www.utu.fi/~jounsmed/asc/). When "Altered States of Consciousness" closed, "Spirit-WWW" picked it up. The FAQ then became the "Out-of-body FAQ." In early 1995, Charles Goodin started the "Astral Projection Home Page." When the Minpro FTP site closed in July 1995, Charles added the articles to the "Astral Projection Home Page." In mid-1995, I started my first Web Site "Phenomena of the Psyche" and also included the Minpro articles. Robert Bruce soon after started his web site, "The Astral Pulse." Later came Alan Guiden's "Traveling Beyond the Body" and Bob Peterson's "Out of Body Experiences: How to have them and what to expect." In late spring 1997, "Phenomena of the Psyche" was discontinued for the summer. Soon after, Alfred Ballabene's "Ballabene´s Astral-Seiten" and Werner Zurfluh's "Over the fence" showed up. Later in the year, the "Astral Projection Home Page" was discontinued and "Wren's Brave New World" was created. In October 1997, I reworked my Web Site and reintroduced it as "Mind Travel Plus." In 1998, Frodpod started his "Astralnaughts Unite. ###### From: "Lars Rune Foleide" Newsgroups: alt.out-of-body References: <6pm95d$55p@newsops.execpc.com> Subject: Re: History about alt.out-of-body and related Web Sites Date: Wed, 29 Jul 1998 14:35:32 +0200 Lines: 23 X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 4.72.3105.0 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V4.72.3105.0 NNTP-Posting-Host: t8o204p56.telia.com X-NNTP-Posting-Host: t8o204p56.telia.com Message-ID: <35bf1679.0@d2o204.telia.com> X-Complaints-To: abuse@telia.no Path: ccw.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news-ge.switch.ch!feed1.news.luth.se!luth.se!news.stupi.se!newsfeed1.swip.net!swipnet!news-feed.inet.tele.dk!bofh.vszbr.cz!newsfeed.online.no!uninett.no!newsfeed2.telia.com!d2o204.telia.com!t8o204p56.telia.com Matt Holmes wrote in message <6pm95d$55p@newsops.execpc.com>... >Later in the year, the "Astral Projection Home Page" >was discontinued and "Wren's Brave New World" was created. Well, that is two separate sites.... But I will pick up where everyone left... Maybe even create a mailing list connected to this newsgroup... But my site will also include dreaming, lucid dreaming and psi. All close related to OBE.... Wren's site will be more personal oriented than mine.... This however was > discontinued. I can't remember exactly when; sometime in early/mid > 1995 I think. In 1994, there was quite alot of activity surounding My first contact with the alt.oobe ng was in 1991. Back then, there wasn't much ngs, and also not much posts. People were using rn -- the good old unix command line news reader program. WWW was never heard of ... Graphics ? what was that ? Windoze ? You mean the X-window stuff ? I remember the good gentleman at gnosys.svle.ma.us, sorry forgotten his name.. He was the one who started alt.oobe by sending out its first ng create command to the internet. I think his interest in obe dropped, perhaps two, three years later, not long after the ng was renamed to its present name, alt.out-of-body. He tried sending out a cancel ng for the old name, but somehow it didn't quite work out, the a.oobe was still around for a long time, and for a while people actually tried posting to it, when it is supposed to be "dead".. Well, I communicated with him via a very ancient method called tell :) Nothing fancy.. we got to synchronize our time difference though.. IRC ? What was that ? maybe it was being used, but not popular.. If he is still reading this and can remember me, I would love to talk to him again. But then again, it's not likely... chances are he's probably doing something else now, far from the maddening crowd... Just some rumblings off the memory of an old man, :) -----== Posted via Deja News, The Leader in Internet Discussion ==----- http://www.dejanews.com/rg_mkgrp.xp Create Your Own Free Member Forum ###### From: "Wren" Newsgroups: alt.out-of-body Subject: Re: History about alt.out-of-body and related Web Sites Date: Wed, 29 Jul 1998 17:20:29 +0100 Organization: Legend Internet Ltd Lines: 11 Message-ID: <35bf4b97.0@katana.legend.co.uk> References: <6pm95d$55p@newsops.execpc.com> NNTP-Posting-Host: katana.legend.co.uk X-Trace: infoserv.netkonect.net 901729658 24006 194.164.0.15 (29 Jul 1998 16:27:38 GMT) X-Complaints-To: usenet@news.netkonect.net NNTP-Posting-Date: 29 Jul 1998 16:27:38 GMT X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 4.72.3110.1 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V4.72.3110.3 X-NNTP-Posting-Host: 194.164.49.97 Path: ccw.ch!pfaff.ethz.ch!news-zh.switch.ch!news.belnet.be!newspump.monmouth.com!newspeer.monmouth.com!newsfeed.nacamar.de!nntp.news.xara.net!xara.net!peer.news.th.u-net.net!u-net!news.netkonect.net!katana.legend.co.uk!194.164.49.97 Nice one Matt, That about covers it.
