Besant and Leadbeater, in the course of their experiments with advanced meditation techniques, attempted to describe what atoms 'looked' like. The general ability to focus one's consciousness on as small a point as desired is mentioned in the classic text on yoga and meditation, Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. It is listed as an ability that comes about as a result of the intense practices of concentration, withdrawal from the normal senses, and other observances that take the practitioner away from our mainly survival-based sense of what 'reality' is. Besant and Leadbeater entered a heightened state of awareness in which they could visualize the atoms of a substance placed before them and hold them still in their consciousness - no mean feat, even in meditation circles! - and described their appearance, interactions, and constituents. Their descriptions did not match the science of the time, but Phillips, a trained physicist, finds many astonishing parallels between the later breakthroughs in quark theory and the findings of B&L. Besant and Leadbeater observed such phenomena as the orientation of particles in a magnetic field, positive and negative spin states, and other phenomena, some that were not known to science at the time, some that were suspected but not provable with the instruments of the time. B&L were not trained scientists and did not know the supposed scientific validity of their observations. As a trained engineer and practitioner of meditation and yoga I was thrilled to see that someone had actually taken the claims of advanced yogic states and applied them to advancing the state of science. The degree of concentration required isn't something that you can learn in a week, or even a year - to sharpen your mind to that degree, it must be much more than a pastime. But I think that to have even the merest actual experience of what, to our present understanding, can only be measured, would be well worth the effort. On Wed, 31 Dec 1997 09:05:24 -0600, "Ronald w.
