There are many systems which use the word Reiki in their title - here you have the Simple Truth as the Global Reiki Masters Association sees it... the following article was written according to the GRMA association's founder (Rev. A. Joseph "Runnin Wolf" Sparti) and explains much about our approach... RUNNIN' WOLF'S ... Simple Truth About Healing & Self Empowerment Spiritual Energy Life Force = "S.E.L.F." What is Reiki? Other than explaining it is a system of accessing the Universal Energy that was re-found by Dr. Usui, no one has yet been able to explain exactly what Reiki is except to say it is the name of an energy system. There are many descriptions of this energy system; and most are somehow anchored to the philosophy or tradition of the instructor and not valid as factual. The word Reiki is Japanese in origin, and refers to "Rei" which means Universal, with the connotation of being "all-encompassing", And "Ki", which is the dynamic life force that animates all living things and resides within us. It's equivalent is the Chinese "Chi", or Indian "Prana". It is called "Light" in some circles and Holy Spirit in Christian areas. It is non-denominational in any event. Reiki has been described as an autonomous, intelligent, and self-directed healing energy. Many practitioners tend to refer to Reiki as a conscious entity; a perfectly benevolent power, which guides their intuitive sense and healing practices. Reiki is often credited with profound personal transformations within the individual practitioner. Dramatic changes in life direction, as well as wonderful physical and emotional healings are attributed to one having received the Reiki attunements. Some experts claim to be able to measure Reiki energy using Kirlean photography, and other similar technical equipment. They still cannot explain what Reiki is. Some psychics have claimed to be able to see the energy, and a few report seeing spiritual entities within the light energy field of participants in Reiki healing. These claims can be neither proved, nor disproved .... but in any case, those claiming to have experienced such phenomena are unable to explain what Reiki is. Eastern influenced practitioners may explain the energy as a balancing force, capable of opening and clearing chakras in the body and/or etheric field. This does not explain what Reiki is, or why it works. Christian practitioners claim that Reiki is akin to the healing energy used by Christ, and may have difficulty in separating Reiki from their beliefs about faith healing. Buddhists say it is the same as that used by their Buddha. Scientific, or techno-based practitioners relate the healing energy to polarity and therapeutic touch, with links to acupressure, or endocrinal manipulation. Psychologically oriented practitioners connect the practice to meditation and self-awareness; even higher consciousness. They can't explain what it is! Sometimes, it is enough to accept that something is good and effective, without dissecting, analyzing, and total scientific comprehension: A sunset is beautiful, and this was true before science came along to explain dust particles and light refraction. Water is essential to life. This was true before technology broke the components down to hydrogen and oxygen. Reiki is a rare gift to mankind, which accelerates the self-healing capabilities of the individual, on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual level. We don't know what it is; or why it works. It simply does! Reiki is simple, in terms of being very easy to do. That's because there is no "wrong" way to do it! The ability to practice Reiki; to "channel" the healing energy, is not a technique that can be learned. Rather, it is an opening to the "Source of Life". This is accomplished through a process of transference from one person who has been attuned and given the knowledge of the attunement process, to another. Practical techniques for hand placement, and common sense guidelines for working with people are a part of the instruction, primarily for the sake of the students' sense of competence, and they do not influence Reiki's effectiveness. No in-depth study of anatomy, biology, chakras and energy centers, or other healing modalities, will outweigh the benefits derived from the practitioner's own good sense of compassion, goodwill, love, and respect: qualities infinitely more important to the healing process than any of the technical procedures outlined in any manual or textbook. Reiki does not require great depth of concentration; no centering, or meditation is needed to produce beneficial results. Reiki appears to work at - or from - a higher level of consciousness, which is detached from the conscious mental process of the practitioner, or healee. All Reiki comes from the same Source. (The different "Levels" or "Degrees" of Reiki practice are discussed in following pages.) A Reiki Master who has been practising for many years is no more "powerful" than the newly initiated one. Reiki is not quantitative, and cannot be used up, stored up, or overdone; nor can it be dissipated through lack of use. Once a person has been attuned to the energy, that energy will continue to be available and present within them for the rest of their life; whether they ever use it, or not. A person who works frequently with the energy is apt to feel more confident of the power of Reiki than one who does not; and may, thereby, instil greater sense of confidence in the patient. Any practitioner who works with people on a regular basis is bound to develop a more refined manner, technique, and perhaps a heightened intuitive sense of the patient's needs. {In such cases care should be taken regarding the "intent" of the Reiki session so the practitioner always remains a "clean Bone".} However: The First (and only) Law of Reiki is this: Reiki is autonomous. It possesses its own "intelligence", and will always act in the best interest of the recipient. Reiki-- not the facilitator-- is the Healer. The responsibility for healing -- or not healing-- lies always within the higher consciousness of the client and The Source. Reiki accelerates healing -- physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Reiki -- not the facilitator-- decides what is of greatest benefit to the recipient. It cannot be directed by human will, and thus the practitioner need not have undue concern about his/her participation in the process. Intent is the key to pleasurable experiences with Reiki -- but even this basic ingredient is not imperative to the successful outcome of treatment. Concentration, focusing, visualization, prayer and meditation may aid in the practitioner-client relationship; in that moral/psychic support is always preferable to the absence thereof -- but Reiki will work effectively with, or without, such practices. Once attuned, the Reiki practitioner is encouraged to relinquish all sense of control over the healing process, for the energy now flows of its own accord, regardless of the will or intent of the channel, through the simple act of touching. Volumes have been written detailing methods for enhancing Reiki. The informed practitioner might be inclined to question the value of such practices, since Reiki -- not the facilitator -- is the healer; and Reiki cannot be controlled or directed, and will always produce the effect of greatest benefit to the patient. Again, it is important to understand that there is no "wrong" way of doing Reiki. A proper attitude accepts that the client's sense of participation in his or her own healing process is highly beneficial. It is undoubtedly important for the client to feel cared for, comforted, and accepted. Any modality that nurtures the person is to be embraced and encouraged, for the value of caring cannot be over estimated as a benefit to the healing process. When using other modalities, or working within the particular belief system of the recipient, the practitioner must be mindful in maintaining the integrity of Reiki, and any practices that are incorporated into the healing session. Altered states of consciousness may result from the deep relaxation that accompanies a Reiki treatment. Under such conditions, the client may be extremely vulnerable to suggestion. At this level, the client must be allowed to function within the realm of his or her own experiential reality, without any interference, or unsought guidance from the practitioner. Herein lies the greatest pitfall to the practitioner; for although Reiki can never be used for harm, the same cannot be said of all modalities, and the best of intentions can have the most disastrous consequences. This is a matter for serious and intense personal considerations on the part of the practitioner, who is admonished to carefully and thoroughly analyze his/her motives and capabilities, before combining other methodologies with Reiki. Experience will, and in short order, convince the practitioner that Reiki needs no enhancement, and that it -- not the facilitator -- knows best what will most benefit the client. Aesthetics: the environment and atmosphere: Furnishings, decorations, candles, incense, music, etc. can enhance relaxation, and perhaps receptivity of the participants in a healing session, but are insignificant to the outcome, and will neither detract from, nor increase the effectiveness of a Reiki treatment. As such, they are open to the free and creative expression of the individual personality. The same is true of ceremonies and rituals. There is no harm in any of these practices, so long as it is understood that they are not a part of "Reiki". Does it hurt? Reiki treatments are usually characterized by feelings of deep relaxation, serenity, and relief from pain on all levels. Reiki treatment may sometimes intensify painful sensations that already exist in a condition. This is a natural part of the "healing cycle", and may be an indication that the healing process has been accelerated. Unless the pain is unbearable, the patient should be assured that this is a positive and temporary occurrence, and to let the practitioner know when the pain has subsided, which is most often an indication that the injury has peaked and is returning to wellness. Can it be harmful? Never! Reiki is non-invasive, and can even be performed without any physical contact between the practitioner and the client. Reiki is a pure healing energy, and delivers precisely what is needed in every situation. Of course, conventional standards of hygiene must be observed, and the right of each individual to gentle and respectful treatment is the responsibility of every practitioner. There is no danger to the practitioner of taking on the karma or negative energy of the client, since the practitioner is protected by Reiki energy throughout the treatment process. Reiki treatment is a matter for rigorous honesty and the truthful dispensation of information. The client should clearly understand that Reiki does what it knows to be most beneficial for them; the practitioner must not claim to be a medical professional (unless they are); and must not give false or misleading representation of the effectiveness of the treatment. The practitioner must never make claims that might indicate they are controlling or directing the healing that takes place. The practitioner must never discourage the patient from continuing to consult their healthcare professional of choice. The failure to clearly explain these issues would be the only possible source of injury that could result from receiving a treatment. The greatest threat to the reputable practice of Reiki is abuse of authority. Such abuse is deplorable, and contrary to the most basic principles of Reiki practice. Practitioners, and especially instructors, or those in "positions of authority", are admonished to remain ever vigilant in their self-assessment, and mindful of falling into the power trip, which is the "Ego" trap! Can I learn to do it? Anyone can do Reiki. What are the Degrees, or Levels, of Reiki? There are three or four commonly used divisions of the "Usui Shiki Ryoho" method of Reiki practice. Some authorities have even more divisions in their instruction programs. Those most commonly known are all that will be addressed here. Each Level of Reiki is accessed by an attunement process that is administered by a Reiki Master Teacher. Level One, or First Degree Reiki is thought to be a low vibrational healing energy. It allows the practitioner to channel Reiki energy with virtually no knowledge. The Level One practitioner is empowered to perform self-healing, and to conduct Reiki energy to others, by the simple act of touching. The "channel" is accessed through a series of four "attunements" administered by a Reiki Master. Running Wolf's notation: Reiki one or level one as it is often referred to is not a different vibrational energy and it is as effective as any other level regardless of claims of "more Power". It's conception and use is primarily for the purposes of introducing Reiki to would be practitioners at a reasonable cost. This process forces the Teacher to present false claims about Reiki and to withhold vital information from them. Additional information will be presented in the Singular attunement process which will hopefully clarify this. Level Two, or Second Degree Reiki is said to be a somewhat higher healing vibration than Level One. In addition to the attunement given by a Master Teacher, the Level Two practitioner is given three of the four sacred symbols, which are taught/believed to intensify the healing vibrations of their Reiki energy. Each symbol represents one aspect of Reiki, and empowers the practitioner to facilitate healing through touch, and without physical contact (sometimes called distant healing), through "intent". Running Wolf's notation: This is also covered in the Singular attunement process. Level Three, Third Degree, or Reiki Master is accessed by a third and final attunement, which is essentially a repetition of the first set of five partial attunements, and the addition of one more empowerment symbol. This again is said to be a higher vibrational level, empowering the practitioner to channel full Reiki healing energy. Fourth Degree? Some Master/Teachers withhold attunement instruction from their Master Level Degree, thus creating a "Fourth" Degree, which is that of Teacher. This is an additional act of deliberate with-holding of information for the sole purpose of additional funds and or control based on acceptance of the presiding Master. In Reiki, the term "Teacher" applies to one who has received the same attunements and symbols as the Master, and has also been instructed in administering the attunement process, and thereby empowered to transfer Reiki healing ability to others. The division in Levels or Degrees of Reiki are commonly used control devices, designed to create hierarchies of power, economic domination, and/or to prolong the dependence of students upon their Masters. These are unnecessary and undesirable practices, which promote separatism and division, rather than a sense of unity among Reiki practitioners. Ideally, all practitioners will be Masters, and empowered to teach the process to others. Reiki is a boundless, limitless Universal energy that exists to empower us in the healing of ourselves, one another, and our planet. It is not the property of, nor under the control of, anyone. Reiki is an important discovery, and is now available to everyone. Who should teach? To become a Reiki Master-Teacher is to receive the ultimate key to self-empowerment, for in so doing, the student attains freedom from any dependence upon their own teacher; becomes equally empowered, and able to progress along the path, unfettered by attachment to the authority of "any" Master. The ability to transfer the Reiki healing ability to another does not necessarily indicate that the practitioner is qualified, or has made a lifetime commitment to, the vocation of teaching. It is not suggested that everyone who has been instructed in performing the attunement process should become a professional teacher. Just as parents are qualified to teach their children to walk, talk, and perform some basic skills without any formal education, Reiki healing ability can be passed on to others with a minimum of instruction on the procedure. As with Reiki healing, intent is the key: the attunement cannot be done "wrong". Some Reiki teachers have more panache, or style, than others, and are able to convey a sense of deep emotional or spiritual transformation to their students. This is a fine gift! But these are merely external trappings, and one need not be overly concerned, if their own teacher seems to lack finesse. The empowerment is the same, whether the attunement was experienced as "deeply mystical", or was simply and plainly achieved. Reiki -- not the Teacher-- is the Empowering Force. To become a teacher of Reiki is to gain the ability to pass on the Gift. If the practitioner wishes to empower only one other person, that is an adequate motive for learning the attunement process. As with using other healing techniques and modalities, the would-be teacher must be willing to examine their own motives and abilities, make a conscientious decision, and a commitment to maintaining the integrity, truth, and wisdom of Reiki, unhindered by issues of egotism: i.e. power, control, elitism. When a person makes the decision to become an authority in any field, it is right, and natural, for them to read and study every available resource, and to seek the best possible education. This holds true for those who would teach Reiki. Expect surprises! With the practice of Reiki becoming more widely accepted, and so much being written about it, one soon discovers that creative license has run rampant. Pure Reiki is so very simple -- yet impossible to explain. Hence, the human (egotistical) effort to complicate things for the sake of mass appeal, or to create status for the practitioner, Reiki sometimes finds itself attached to doctrines and dogma which have no real connection to the practice of Reiki. Some "authorities" would shroud the practice of Reiki in mystery, claiming it as the esoteric domain for a "chosen few" recipients. Many claim to know what is best for their student, and attach their own list of requirements to be fulfilled in order for the student to "earn" the privilege of practising -- and especially, teaching-- Reiki. This is one more example of manipulation, domination and control. Some promote misinformation about the possible harmful side-effects of getting "too much, too soon", and exaggerate the possibility of "intense physical and/or emotional adjustment" periods as a result of accelerated attunements. This idea is preposterous! Reiki is never harmful to the recipient, whether receiving attunements or simple healing treatments. Reiki decides how much energy the individual requires, and never exceeds that tolerance. This sort of fear-mongering is more apt to create "physical and/or emotional adjustment('disturbance')" than any amount of Reiki ever would. This is another tactic employed by "authorities" who evidently consider themselves better qualified to discern the spiritual condition (merit) of the applicant, than is Reiki itself. The only authority qualified to decide who should have Reiki, is Reiki! When an individual makes the decision to learn Reiki, the time is right! It is one thing to instruct others in the use of healing techniques, spiritual philosophies or ideologies --or any other subject-- which the instructor has found, after sufficient study and investigation, to be valid. It is quite another matter to add components to the practice of Reiki, under the guise that they are in any way related, much less, imperative to its use! The best teacher is the one that is no longer needed. The best teacher is one who encourages the highest level of development. The best teacher is the one that excites and inspires the pupil to remain independent, clear, creative, thoughtful, capable of unbiased investigation, and well prepared to perform the duties and requirements of the given discipline. When the student's understanding surpasses that of the teacher, that teacher has been successful. One capable of maintaining such selfless detachment and high standards might well contemplate the admirable calling to be a professional teacher! ShadowWolf Rev. Rev. Arla was one of my students and was one of two women who received the Singular attunement from me when I first realized it could be done. She traveled with me for some time transcribing my classroom work into typed work in return for her keep. She than proceeded to rob me of physical possessions and bring false charges against me and has stalked me continuously over these past years. So thank you for reminding me just how long I have let this go on. This is not the first time she is brought up here either and I doubt that it will be the last. It should be easy to see where she got her material. >> From MYSTICAL INSIGHTS: ISSUE 102; Body, Mind, soul; March 1994 HEALING WITH REIKI Long ago, throughout the world, man would travel great distances to find what is called in this time a Doctor. Man in that time called this person by a different name, Shaman, Medicine Woman/man, Witch doctor, even a simple term of Healer, but the duties of this person were the same as those of the modern Doctor of today. All had the same desire and responsibility to mankind. To help the people. Science was little known in those times, at least as we understand it today, yet much of what we accept today is derived from those times. Old healing remedies have been handed down through the centuries from Healer to healer, Parent-to-Parent and friend-to-friend. The most common example I can think of is Chicken Soup. Almost any family can recall a special remedy used by their Grandparents. Two things were different back then; the Healer did not perform his trade for great monetary wealth, but rather for the pride of being of service to his people and this attitude gave him great prestige among all peoples. The second thing is that there were no supplies of herbs (current term drugs) given to him to hand out but rather he used Herbs he had learned about on his own or maybe had been passed down to him/her from generations of Healers that served before him. Simply put when the Healer gave someone a herb He knew what it would do. A lesson our current medical profession could learn from. Man has progressed to great wonders in medicine since, but something has been lost along the way. Respect for the old proven ways of Healing has given way to hiding the pain in patients rather than fixing the problem. Faith in old ways is not enough because we just don't know how to explain how these old systems work. In other words, if science has not explained it than it can't work. Yet, if this is truth, than WHY does the pharmaceutical community still go to great lengths to discover how primitive Healers still work? Control is my answer to this. If they control, we must accept. Today I am pleased to say that there is a strong resurgence in old methods that still work. Methods that do not require drugs with debilitating side effects, but rather methods that are so simple to use that even children can use them. I do not mean to imply that we don't need the Doctors but rather that we may not need them quite so much as we think. And that brings me to the point of this story. REIKI Insert graphic The most simple system of personal empowerment I have ever experienced A system so simple that children use it. A system that requires no special ability to use. A system that does not require any special beliefs. In fact all that is needed to use the Reiki healing system is the desire to help yourself and others. To quote "Ma Bell", "reach out and touch someone" . This system and others similar to it are currently being used throughout the world. Reiki is easy to learn and requires no special skills or abilities. A few hours of your time enables you to do Reiki for the rest of your life.
