I wrote this recently in response to a question about reincarnation and karma. Although it does not seem to connect directly with your question I left it largely unedited and belief that you will get the possible connection with Reiki and what it might be: First let's look at what you refer to as the hypothetical ocean (of being). A few years ago I saw a BBC series "World on the rocks" presented by some physics professor who had the gift of explaining very complicated things to a layperson. In one of the episodes he interviews the leading nuclear physicist at the CERN laboratory (the European nuclear accelerator) in Switzerland. For the following you must bear in mind that much of physics is now mathematical and that a model is developed and subsequent (physical) experiments are designed to confirm the model as adequate or insufficient. The scientist says (verbatim): "We are not interested in matter anymore. Matter only shows that something has happened" (end verbatim). He then goes on to explain that they are now working with "fields of potential". He says "we do not know what these fields are, how they look, but with exactly 36 fields (not 35 or 37) we create any known nuclear particle, and thus matter." Now to the rest of your question I will tread where Horaku feared to tread. First, let me apologise for what will look like a mishmash of various ideas and secondly bear in mind that this is an attempt to construct a model and that model are never reality as such. If we look at our bodies, then there must be some kind of force that keeps it together and does not let it fall apart into individual cells. Similar forces operate in the mental sphere, obvious manifestations are our opinions. Like gravitation bends space, so do our points of view and opinions bend what we perceive to what is already there. Each one of us has probably come across individuals who can turn even the most positive aspects into something negative to suit their present, usually depressed, frame of mind.We then form complex ideas where everything we encounter further reinforces the existing structures of attachment. Our beliefs, attitudes and actions are somehow our personal fields of potential, but they also impress themselves onto the cosmic fields of potential. According to H. Dumoulin the Avatamsaka sutra refers to the "unhindered, unimpeded interpenetration of all phenomena." Unresolved emotional charges then persist after our death and the more attached we are to a set of beliefs the more these charges stick together. Maybe you could liken them to the atom where its particels are inextrictably "tied together." Note that there is no entity which has these charges, if anything, the charges could or would form another entity. If we take the Tibetan book of the dead this seems to be very much what happens. After encountering the 6 mild deities, the 6 fierce deities, the "person" then is sort of in limbo and starts looking around at the various possibilities for existence in order to dissipate the charges. The human realm seems to be particularily inviting, mainy because it looks familiar, attachments from the past. Eventually it choses a womb and is reborn as a human being. This whole process does not requires an entity, soul, etc that survives our death but can function simply in terms of the attractive and repellant natural forces of whatever is left behind. Of course, this means that strictly speaking it is not "you" that is reborn but the "effects" that you leave behind. Also, it is not a matter of having to return, but rather that the charge potential differences create a natural directional pull, just like a pressure differential in the air creates wind. Following this, "it" is wanting to return in order to equalise the pressure. If "you" are not reborn, then why should you worry about karma? For me it becomes a question of "Will I leave a positive or a negative legacy for the person who will inherit my stuff, and in a very real way is me, but is also not me?" It becomes a question of compassion, not only for the beings in the present but also the beings of the past and the future. To put the whole thing somewhat differently. Unresolved thoughts, emotions and actions (unresolved=non-zero energy state) create ripples or disturbance in the environment, including the fields of potential, which exist beyond our physical death. These disturbances will in turn manifest, become actualized in some form in the future. Lastly, we should also note that at /any/ stage, right up the just before entering the womb, there is the possibility of liberation and proceeding to the pure land instead of an earthly existence.
