It is a scan on your self, but once you learn it will change the way you scan others. I learned this method from http://www.dhamma.org/ The method is quite simple and very powerful. I was taught in 10 day retreat, but the basic method can then be used in matter of minutes. Here is how I was taught Sit for a one hour session and focus on only the triangular area of the nose first be aware of all the sensations. Breath movement, temperature, any vibration that is present. This is done in 4 sessions for about 6 (? ) days. On the 6th day shift your perception to the top of your head. Repeat and only observe the sensations for an hour session This was done for about a day. Then once you get good at this observation method take your awareness down you body starting at the head and let your awareness sweep very slowly down to your feet. Then bring it up again. feel all the sensations with each sweep. Repeat, repeat, for an hour session That is it. If this is done for only 15 min you get results. Once you are good with your self then try the same sweep while in a Reiki session. During the session you were not allowed to move. This is a very intense class, however there were many beginners. If you were to do a supervised class such as this, a 20 minute Gassho session would just fly by, it is all a sense of perspective, this is why he does the 10 day class. Because of the training I received form this class, the perception of time has never been the same for me.
