Some people like things complicated, and some people like them simple. Some people will claim their system is more effective than others, and the others will counterclaim right back. In my experience, they're all about the same except for the way they're dressed up. IMHO it's just as important, if not more so, to choose a teacher that you resonate with, regardless of which system he or she is teaching. And focus on compassion rather than letting oneself be drawn into arguments over whose system is better. ;-) For some specific information, try http://angelreiki.nu and look for the various manuals there. I don't think there's one there for Tera Mai, but you can probably do a Google search and come up with some more info. The way that Reiki has been taught in the West has revolved around 'attuning' you to some symbols (though we now know that Usui Sensei did not do this) and somewhere along the line people have realised that you can 'attune' people to non-Reiki symbols. Reiki is very malleable, and can be distorted endlessly into different ways of working. My personal preference is to try and get as close as I can to Reiki's original form, and to keep my practice simple, to get rid of the unnecessary clutter, though I realise that some systems will resonate with some people, and turn others off. No matter what system you choose, I believe that it is important to commit yourself and work hard with that system. Unfortunately some people seem to end up 'course junkies', looking for the answer, going on a course, getting a new manual, putting it on the shelf, not doing what they were taught on the course - not putting it into practice - and they still feel that something is empty, so that go on another course, put the manual on the shelf, and never really get to grips with any system. Thanks a lot, Viv Viv, There have been numerous discussions of this concerning this topic. If you do a search you will find many view points. There are obviously two major schools of thought. One is the Unified Reiki approach that claims all Reiki's are equal and most in that group tend to focus on a simpler approach, keeping with the basics. The Second approach is that the Reiki variations are not equal and some Types have made significant improvements on the Traditional Reiki System. From my experience of working with Reiki and other energy systems (Reiki since 1984) I have found there to be a truth in both approaches. I tend to prefer a simpler approach, however there are times when other methods work much better. This all depends on each individual. There is also the issue of the teacher. In todays world there is such a variety of teachers in the "Reiki" energy healing world and just like in almost every profession you have some excellent teachers and some that are not so good. Anytime you work with non-tangible healing methods it does invite a nebulous aspect into the framework of healing. Because of this aspect one needs to be very careful who they choose to work with. Even though the energy may be similar, the same cannot be said for teachers or Master as they are called in Reiki. Receiving an Attunement to Teach does not make a person automatically a Spiritual person. About your question about Initiations. There are definitions for what an Initiation is. Running naked down a street can be considered an Initiation as well as a life changing Spiritual experience. What we are refering to here is of course the more spiritual aspects. I tend to define what occurs with Reiki as an Attunement. An initiation is something that may occur with a Reiki attunement but it may not always. It is because of this aspect many different variations have occurred. The difference between and Initiation and Attunement is significant. Briefly the attunement is having the ability to resonate with the energy like a tuning fork and pass the signature on to others, an Initiation takes the process much further and begins to integrate the energy much deeper and ground the energy so the whole body becomes one with the vibration. I explain this further on my web site: http://www.skhm.org/skhmeng/AttunementInitiation.html When I here people get an Attunement and they say, oh I did not feel much, then there is a very strong possibility an Initiation did not occur. This does not mean an Attunement did not work. Many people can be excellent channels without ever having an Initiation. In fact they can pass the vibration on to someone else and they can have an initiation were there teacher as not. This is because an initiation comes more from within a person. Everyone has this ability whether they come in contact with Reiki or other systems or not. It is a natural part of being human. The attunement simply help a person wake up to that part that they already have within them. Outside influences can effect this process. With the proper support everyone can have this experience. What a Reiki class does is help create that support, this is why the right teacher is so important. For many it is the doorway into spiritual development and enlightenment. The different approaches are variations that have worked better for different people. It is not so much different from a preference of the type of fruit you enjoy most. Does everyone prefer apples over oranges? No. The same is true with the different types of Reiki. Many times it is simply the Cultural attachment that may help a person feel more connect to the energy being presented. Keep in mind that the energy will take on the form that you feel most comfortable with. If a person has a strong connection to Japan, they may have a stronger connection to the more traditional Japanese styles. If a person has a Bias toward Japanese they may have a stronger connection to some of the other methods which may claim a Tibetan or strictly Buddhist connection. If a person is a Christian they may be more open to the aspects that resonate with Christ healing. Takata knew this when she created the Christian stories about Usui. We are all in a process of spiritual acceleration and Reiki is just one of many tools on the planet to help facilitate this process. Currently it is probably one of the better know systems because of it wide accepted appeal and simplicity. It was one of the first systems that also put a value on the spiritual healing process and provided a vehicle for anyone to become an energy healer. Find the flavor that you resonate the most with and then look within and make your own connection. Allow the energy to be your teacher.
