Unless someone is spamming or crossposting with a huge BI, or being naughty little hackers, for instance, engaging in denial of service attacks, they are not going to interfere with anyone's right to free speech, no matter how aggrieved someone else may feel about it. There are two ways to handle this kind of person. 1) Either ignore him, and hope he goes away on his own (in any case, just ignore him), or 2) everyone can jump on the bandwagon and act just like him. When he finds that there's no one and nothing he can pick on, and in fact, they are all picking on him with the same irrational, antisocial behavior, outnumbering and outgunning him, he may get bored and look for fresher, more innocent game elsewhere. And it wouldn't be much trouble to follow him wherever he goes, wreaking chaos everywhere.... The second option, is, of course, not civilized, and reduces one to his level, and is totally disruptive of any conversations that anyone might wish to have anywhere. Option 1) is the way to go. However, if all of us ahr folks, and the sci.med.dentistry and misc.health.alternative people all vote unanimously to go for Option 2)? .....Naw, I didn't think so. But it was a fun thought there for a brief moment. Sadly, you are wrong. One of the posters in m.h.a. was threatend with termination of service by her ISP becuase another poster, Debbee, complained. The other supporters of alternative medicine in m.h.a. supported the complaint and have indicated that they woulddo it if they were Debbee. I had a Hotmail account closed because someone, annonymously, complained about me. If one does not like what someone else does, *every* newsreader has a 'NEXT' button. In these circumstances, whining to an ISP or mail service provider is juvenile, at best. However, clearly illegal acts should be reported, like impersonating a doctor and offering medical advice. ###### From: xwoodvine@netidea.com (Joel) Newsgroups: alt.healing.reiki Subject: Re: improper use....... I've been posting on ahr since about June 2000, and there have been few if any complaints about my netiquette or intent. Police (and force/aggression in general) ist the wrong way. Learn from the Aikido (which via Ki is related to Reiki) people, that the best way to stop aggression is to not be agressive oneself, but rather to let the aggressor wast off his aggression without achieving anything. In news that is simple and risk-less: just delete his posts. > Sorry, Theo, but ISP providers are much too busy to play baby-sitter. That also. So long he is getting power and will stay to get more. Only stopping feeding him can break his interest. And that is: no answers any more to his posts. None whatsoever. Or as "replacing the topic Reiki with the topic "fighting slanging matches". I have seen an other news group where regulars decided that debating with an troll was fun. On topic discussions dropped in volume, because half of the regulars were just playing fights, so no time to discuss the topic. After the other half of the regulars had left (because they were fed up with being attacked), all the remaining rest of on topic discussions dried up. And they still had the troll 2 years later, when I gave the group up. Not a sensible thing to copy. Oh, interesting coincidence: while this troll is/impersonates an dentist, the troll there was/impersonated an biology professor. -- Neil Franklin, neil@franklin.ch.remove http://neil.franklin.ch/ Hacker, Unix Guru, El Eng HTL/BSc, Programmer, Archer, Blacksmith - hardware runs the world, software controls the hardware code generates the software, have you coded today? ###### From: suzee Newsgroups: alt.healing.reiki Subject: Re: improper use....... Specifically you cannot control those who spinelessly complain to ISP's for trivial reasons. And you cannot force them to respond to your questions any more than I could force you to respond to mine. But unfortunately it appears that you are directing your efforts at "resolving" this problem with individuals (like Jan D and Debbee A ) who could care less about your concerns. But it is your choice to beat your head against a wall trying to get either of them to either answer your questions or behave in a way that you would like. Just like you choose to ignore my questions about vaccination (which I believe are important and on topic) they choose to ignore your questions about why they complained or think it is appropriate to complain about your posting behavior. It is an exercise in futility to deal directly with either of these individuals. But the choice is yours. Your efforts would better be directed to your ISP to determine from them what conduct they approve and what conduct is not acceptable. Then you can decide whether you can tolerate their code of conduct. It is rather simple assuming that they can give you specific guidelines to follow. And if you cannot tolerate their conditions then get another ISP. And if you cannot get another ISP then decide whether you would rather live with their conditions or not participate in usenet. In my case it was not to do with there being any complaint whatsoever. It was an act of ostracism along religous lines, one which had been there in intention for some two years or so. And I do mean religious: not any stand on A.M. I received warning of it via personal email some two years earlier. I was upset by that at the time, and referred to it then on MHA. Debbee complained to Karuna's ISP because Karuna insisted that Debbee was a man. Karuna's ISP then forbid her to call Debbee a man. Religion had nothing to do with Debbee complaining about Karuna AFAIK. I think that Karuna sometimes jump to erroneous conclusions (eg her certainty that Debbee was a man, or her believing vaccinations are a bizarre experiment) without having good evidence. This may be another example of this. Aloha, Rich ------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------ The best defense to logic is ignorance.
