A small group of us took 1st degree last week, and all have been practicing self treatments since. One person's experience, though, is vastly differeent from that of the rest of us, and from anything I've read in the several Reiki books I've reviewed. During the class, when she was receiving treatment on one occasion (not on others) as we practiced on each other, her head "automatically" fell slowly forward and later backwards and in that position it would move slowly from side to side, almost out of her control (she could regain control but only with an effort). When she practices self treatment now, she sits on the floor, hands on her lap palm upwards, visualizes the Reiki energy flooding into her ... and within seconds she seems to move into what I can only describe as a trance. Literally it will cut her words off mid-word if she's talking. Her head flops slowly forward or backwards, she slowly starts to topple to one side (or the other), then her neck goes into this incredible stretch even further to whichever side she's leaning, the tendons or muscles so taut you could strum them like guitar strings ... and it so happens the stretch seems to "hit" exactly a part of her neck, or shoulders, or back, that's been in pain or very tense prior to the session. When she "comes out" of this, the stretch can be maintained for 10 or 15 minutes, she feels great, a wonderful relief from stress or tension or even pain in her neck/shoulders/back. While she's seemingly "in trance" I can talk to her, and she's entirely lucid, just very slow at responding, speaking as if every word has to be dragged out of her. When she gives a treatment (still just practicing among ourselves) she goes exactly the same way! a few seconds in ... and her knees buckle but not to the point of collapse, her head topples forward, her arms go loose, and it's like watching an undersea diver as she soooo sloowly fights gravity to puts her hands into positions on the recipient, with her eyes closed ... literally unable to open them. Still lucid, still able to maintain a slow conversation. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Any suggestions? While trusting that Reiki can do no harm, she's somewhat disturbed by this, naturally can't do it while her kids are around or it would scare them (and of course she dare not try giving them Reiki as her descent into a Zombie-like state would scare the living daylights out of them). One is Subud. This was a spiritually based psycho-physical process brought to England, the U.S., and elsewhere sometime around 1960. Post-initiation, a lot of the initiates responded much as you have described, and even did so while standing or doing a sort of dance. You might wish to read: http://www.isleofavalon.co.uk/GlastonburyArchive/callnomm/cnm-07.html The other thing that this reminds me of are spontaneous movements associated with certain yoga practices (and I do not mean "hatha yoga," physical postures -- I mean meditation). In particular, I remember a descripition of this kind of effect ensuing from the practice of certain Chinese Daoist meditation exercises; and by "exercise" I mean something psycho-energetic, nothing to do with deliberate physical movements at all. The third thing that comes to mind is Eric Scott Pearl's energy-healing, which seemed at times to induce these kinds of movements in recipients of the healing energy. At least from Pearl's own descriptions, the healing sessions were frequently amazingly effective in actually curing problems. So, these are just thoughts. Nothing definitive, of course. She should consult at least two neuro-muscular physicians (one for a second opinion) because the relaxed state of mind she seems to be entering when channeling Reiki could cause a physical neurological disorder to become known. It just so happens one of my regular clients is a Neuro-Muscular physician and we had a similar conversation just a few days ago. One of his friends, a long time Wiccan High Priestess began to manifest similar symptoms. She went to her regular physician who said it was just in her mind and not to worry about it. The symptoms grew more severe and she spoke with my repeat client, who gave her a formal examination. He found a significant and very legitimate physical disorder, and recommended a cat-scan. The scan revealed a malignant brain tumor, and unfortunately our science was not advanced enough to cure it. She died within one year of the diagnosis. If your friend is manifesting symptoms the way you have described, she should strongly consider a formal neuro-muscular examination by a very qualified individual. Reiki doesn't cause people to "weird-out" in the way her symptoms are manifesting. If it isn't a legitimate physical disorder causing those symptoms then she may just be seeking fanciful attention from the group and others. Even experienced trance mediums have to put on a show for others in order to make their work (which can be valid) appear valid. I really don't know why your friend would manifest those symptoms but regardless of all the possibilities, they suggest something is wrong. The good news is that it seems that what she's experiencing IS Reiki after all, and IS beneficial ... but she needs to find a way to stop the Undo aspect at will, so she can actually self-treat and treat others conventionally when she wants to, (and not scare the kids while doing so). I think the "Reiki Undo" is the most accurate depiction of what she's experiencing ... just an extreme version of it, perhaps to reflect the extreme stresses in her life at the moment. The one thing I knew is that she wasn't/isn't show-boating ... she's been a rock-solid friend for more than 25 years, I know her extremely well. She REALLY wanted Reiki for all the elements she can't enjoy at the moment because of the way the energy seems to take over and guide her into these movements. Now the question becomes, how to retain the Reiki while losing the movements! Thanks again. This seems a very supportive group (I guess I shouldn't be surprised, given the topic?).
